OT: (Kinda) They use CD's to make cards!

well, at least you could use yarn or crochet cotton, I guess.

I saw something similar on The Carol Duval Show. I'm amazed, did a search, and found this!

It's apparently really popular in the netherlands, but I hadn't seen it before. Now you know what you can do with your old AOL CD's!

I have seen on some website, CDs used as drop spindle tops and painted with what looked like glass paints and made to look like stained glass.

Wow, those are really pretty! I don't embroider though (my Mom used to), but I bet you could paint pictures on the CDs. I've seen paintings on Circular Saw Blades at crafts shows, so why not on CDs, right?

Thank you for sharing the URL. :o)

I remember saving that website to my favorites on the old computer, which has gone to computer heaven now, so I've lost everything I had on it that I didn't get the chance to save to disks. :o/ If I find the URL again, I'll post it on here.

There is one pattern for a CD coaster on this website:

website has links to a lot of other sites that you might enjoy too. I saw something listed for CD coasters, but unfortunately that page wasn't there anymore... but the other sites are nice!

Hi,

Don't Helen and Els have uses for the CD's too? You use them in the braiding that I can't for the life of me remember what it's called.

Hugs,

Nora

Hi Nora, you're thinking of kumihimo, I think :-) I can't believe it took me four tries to spell it right! Thank goodness for the backspace key.

Hi Sue,

Yes, that's the word I couldn't think of at the time, thank you.

Does anyone know where to get the patterns for those type of 'thread through hole' embroidery?

A couple of years ago, I went to a craft fair at a place that does courses as well, and one of the women was embroiering cards using that technique. Some of them were really clever, but she wouldn't sell me any cards. She did tell me that someone else got the patterns from the internet, but she couldn't tell me where, and I couldn't think of anything specific to search on.

TIA

Thank you, Shirley! Those two had exactly what I was looking for!

Like I said, I tried searching, but I didn't have any idea what they were called - the woman at the craft fair had told me to search on "embroidery", but you can imagine how many hits that got :-( . But now I've got plenty to be getting on with.

Me too. :-) This all reminds me of some coasters I picked up in Portugal. They are round glass with crochet around the glass. The centre is usually a flower of some type (some were just fancy doily type centres), worked on the round and encasing the glass. Any one know what I'm talking about?

That could be done on CDs as well, as the reflective nature of the CD could add to the design.

Tara

P.S. Yes, I did bring some back, so I could take photos if needed. But someone here can usually find things on the web. :-)
