OT: my Mom (GeeGee) from Noreen

OMG, when it rains, it POURS. My mom fell Monday night, and broke her hip. It happened around 10pm, she got up to turn her thermostat down, and turned away to go back to bed, and down she went. You'd have to *know* my mother... the first thing out of her mouth was "sonovaBITCH". She laid there a few minutes, knew she was not going to get up, and started hollering for help. (there are call buttons in the bedroom and bathroom, but NOT in the hallway in her apartment). The maintainence man heard her, entered her apt, called 911 and stayed with her till the ambulance arrived. In the meantime, another neighbor heard the ruckus and went downstairs to let the EMT's in the building. My cousin, Lorraine, who is very close to my mom, more like sisters than neice and aunt (they're only 10 years apart) who has medical P.O.A. wasn't called till 6am at mom's insistance that none of us be bothered till morning. Lorraine called my sister, Nancy by 6:30 am, and Nancy called ME by 7am. Mom had surgery by 3pm. I feel that she got dizzy due to the liquid diet she was placed on for the continuing tests re: her cancer. GOOD news: they replaced the ball and the head, the actual pelvis was NOT shattered or broken. More GOOD news, the fall caused the break, NOT the break caused the fall (with osteoporosis running in the family, this is extremely good news for my sister and I!) She has walked already this morning, and will be at St. Anthony's Hospital another five to eight days. DURING this time, they are re-running ALL her cancer testing, as one of her doctors feels that the previous tests were not as conclusive as he would feel comfortable with, so it's like getting a second opinion. After the hospital, she will go to a rehab center for I-don't-know-how-long. Mom LOVES to get cards, so email ME at n o r e e n DOT j AT g m a i l DOT c o m for it, I don't want to place her full name here on the NG. That's it for now. Dennis was planning on visiting her, as he lives nearby, and she had visited him when he was hospitalized. Love, Noreen

My mother (96) was provided with a call button on a neck cord but she refused to wear it.

When she fell it was near a neighbour's house but the neighbour can't get out of her house because of her disability.

I really hope I'm not as stubborn when I'm old.

Tomorrow ... :-)

Although my mobile is in my pocket these days, not my bag. When I fell and it was in my bag I didn't even know how to use it - the young man who looked like a thug found my home number on it (how?) and called Spouse.

I love that thug :-)

Be Prepared.

you should put in an emergency number Mary

Call it S.O.S. all uk police look for this as do many others who come across accidents etc.

Noreen,

I'm so sorry to hear of your mom's accident. She'll be in my thoughts and prayers. It's wonderful that she's already up and walking. I hope the new tests yield more positive news.

My brother's a fireman here in the US, and he told me the there is a code that emergency workers know: ICE. In Case of Emergency. He told me everyone should have an ICE listing in their contacts on their mobile phone, so an emergency worker could contact the proper person(s) if the owner of the phone couldn't tell them who to call.

You could list several contacts in order of who should be contacted first, second, and so on.

This might be a good time to double-check that your mother/father/brother/disabled friend have some sort of "S.O.S." or "ICE" number programmed into the contact list of their phone, particularly if they don't know how to use the contact list/phone book in their cell phones. I know my other half usually just dials anyone he needs to call like he was at home, or hits the call button if their number comes up as having been a missed call, so I made sure that he had a couple of ICE numbers in his phone: the house number and my cell phone.

Keeping good thoughts for your mother, and for the second opinion.

What? When my mother was knocked down and broke her hip the same way, they pegged the ball back on and told her _not_ to walk right away. I guess the rehab system has changed in the last few decades.

That is one indomitable lady Noreen! That fighting spirit will take her through this latest trauma. Hopeful prayers being said that the second opinion will be more positive.

((((((Noreen)))))) hugs for you to help keep you strong.

Wow, Noreen, I'm sorry to hear the latest. Your mom sounds like an extraordinarily tough woman. Getting a second opinion can be a good thing to come out of this.
