OT: New Year's Day Lucky Foods

Every New Year's Day we have a party and serve black eyed peas, collard greens and cornbread for health, wealth and luck. This is a particularly southern US tradition. I was wondering how everyone else celebrates New Year's Day, with regard to the food.

Happy New Year!

Husband is originally from the south, so this is our New Year's tradition as well. In the early years of our marriage when money was very tight, I would comment about how well it was working :P He would respond "Just imagine if we didn't eat them!"

My grandmother always made a pork roast and sauerkraut to get the desired results, which as a child, I found less than thrilling :)

LOL! My DH would make snide comments about the effectiveness of the Lucky Food Tradition, but I persisted.

When I was small, we had no New Year's Day tradition as far as food went. Neither of my folks is from the south, and neither had such a tradition. The 1st time I learned about black eyed peas for New Year's, I was about 16 years old, working in a fast food restaurant on New Year's Day. The manager instructed us to put small cups of peas on each plate (it was a fish joint) and I thought it was weird. My friends told me about the southern tradition, and I've been doing it ever since.

Hesira,

We used to on new years. I used to grow callard greens and black eyed pease in my garden when I had one, my parents are from the south. I was born and raised in NI Illinois and still here for some reason?

It sounds moth watering to me.

Hugs & God bless, Dennis & Gail

Hesira,

I'm from the south and that is the same food we eat on New Years day, too. I'm not a huge fan of collard greens, so I make spinach instead. Hey, greens is greens, right? :-) We actually eat this meal throughout the year at our house, because I love the peas and cornbread. I also make rice to go with the peas.

My mom always made cooked cabbage which she would always put money in. (a quarter or 50-cent piece if she had one.)

I forgot about the apples! Yes, that was part of the tradition at Grandma's house along with the pork and sauerkraut. I always spent my holiday vacation from school with my grandparents.
