Permission needed to make Design Crochet by Mark Dittrick available in braille/electronic format for blind people

Hi all,

I am a blind crocheter who wants to get an electronic version of the following book. However, the publisher is no longer publishing, and I do not know how to get in touch with the editor. A woman in Arizona has a small business through which she makes crochet and knitting books available to blind and visually-impaired people in braille and electronic format, and she needs permission from the pertinent person to make the book available. how can we get in touch with such person/people?

thanks very much,

David Sky Vancouver, B.C., Canada

(from an online critique)

Design Crochet, edited by Mark Dittrick, Hawthorn Books, Inc., New York, 1978, ISBN 0801520193

Chapters by Lillian Bailey, Linda Osborne Blood, Nan Jennes Brown, Judith Copeland, Del Pitt Feldman, Jacqueline Henderson, Arlene Mintzer, Barbara Muccio.

I bought the book for the chapter on modular crochet by Copeland. It has wonderful instructions on how to crochet pullovers for any size body, using any size yarn based on making rectangles and sewing them together.

The photos are very 70s looking, but the instructions are timeless.

You know, David, if this is for your own use, I would think that you could get someone to read it for you and tape it. Do you have a local CNIB? They might be able to help you. Good luck.

A friend who wanted to record a CD of folk songs contacted the writer of each song to obtain permission to use the material. Since it is primarily one chapter that you would like to use, try contacting the person who wrote that chapter for their permission. DA

Katherine,

I want the book specifically in electronic format, it's much easier to search for text. And the woman who does this in Arizona does a fantastic clean job of scanning books.

Thanks

Da,

No, I want the entire book in electronic format. All that stuff written about the book is in fact a critique I found on the net.

Thanks

Katherine,

Thanks, I have forwarded your info to Marjorie. In regard to Hawthorn Books, I googled them but didn't find any website of theirs, but did find a note saying the person thought that Hawthorn was "no longer publishing." And since my own scanning software is rather ancient, I'd like good quality scanning from someone else. I'll check with the company you mentioned too.

Thanks,

David

Noreen!

Hi again, it has been a while! Thanks for the re-welcome and the help you previously gave me with crochet stitches, I finally figured out that stitches are nothing more than repeating the same patterns of yoh, insert, sk st, sc, dc, ch, etc. And that's made my crocheting much more creative and enjoyable!

Cheers, wishing you well,

David

Els,

I have an 'alterior motive' in wanting this book in electronic format by the woman in Arizona - it will become available to other blind and visually-impaired people as well. Also, I simply prefer electronic format to tape or CD because it is so much easier to search for a particular section.

thanks,

david

David, That is a good motive, and I am sure that the publishers and designers would support you.

Lucille,

might very well be the one, I'll check. the spelling in the book critique was without an 'e' after 'hawthorn'...

*chuckle*

Just to confirm... I checked, hawthorne Books with the 'e' does not carry Design Crochet, it's a mostly-fiction publishing co and has been publishing since 2001 or so, whereas Design Crochet was published in 1978. Thanks for the tip regardless.
