protective cloth

About 6 months ago I read of a new cloth-type material that was very flexible in normal use but if it "felt" severe impact pressure it would almost instantly become rigid and absorb the impact.

I am trying to design some athletic clothing that would be light weight, comfortable, and flexible for the user (think of a pair of soccer shorts or a jersey), but if it "senses" an impact it will momentarily become rigid and absorb the impact of someone kicking them.

Has anyone heard of this material/textile before?

thanks, Ron

The only one I've heard about Ron is Piezoelectric material - the sort used in airbags in cars. See the article at:

Thanks Bernadette,

Not quite. I was thinking of using the material to make soccer jerseys, shorts, socks. I've just been informed of something called shear-thickening materials/textiles. I'm checking it out now. That seems like it has some potential.

Has anyone here ever used shear-thickening textiles? Or know more about it's use in sports apparel?

many thanks,

Ron

Thanks for clarifying that Ron. The people to contact seem to be d3o Labs. Here is their link:

I believe experiments have been made using this material as a lining as it protects against knife attacks.

Can you imagine the sweaters you could knit with it when they start packaging it as yarn! Fashionable *and* protective--that's what I look for in my clothing. ;-)
