ravelry anyone?

I'm there as Hesira.

I've found it really useful for looking up patterns and matching them to certain yarns. I don't participate in the forums or groups. I have made a yarn trade there, and have found new knitting friends from my region.

I know that some people here feel that ravelry will take away from this group, but I've found that the 2 are completely different and not mutually exclusive.

I have *finally* gotten my invite to Ravelry. Honestly, I signed up for it so long ago that I had forgotten about it. So when I got my invite, I was pleasantly surprised! I've only been on a week and I love it. Anyone else there as well? My name is Micksmom2.

That's all in how you look at it. I'll tell you what took people away from this group. A year or so ago, we got spammed by trolls. People immediately panicked and a Yahoo group was formed with a bunch of controls. Tons of people went over there and never came back. A few of the people are reading both groups, but not very many. So you can blame that, and not Ravelry.

I've also noticed that traffic here is earlier in the day. There's virtually no one on here at night.

Good - because it's NOT. It's so totally different from what goes on here, and each can co-exist.

I gave you the reason above as to why this group has basically been gutted. There are a few regulars here, and the odd time we get some new people. As much as I hate to say it, I think Usenet is going to fade away eventually. Some ISP's don't even provide access to it anymore and a lot of people have to read it through Google.

I don't think you have to have ADD to have that problem (smile). That happens to me all the time, and at some point you ask yourself "now, how did I get here?"

Hi Lisa, I'm on Ravelry and loving it. My I.D. is "Yarnfanatic". Drop over and see my stash and projects, and I'll come see what you've done with your notebook. (smile).

I love the pattern and yarn databases. I've joined a couple of groups and read the "For the Love of Ravelry" forum, since it is a wealth of info on how to use the site. I saw you were online a while ago and sent you a message ;>)

One group I joined that doesn't eat a lot of time and is SO fun is called Yarnfeathers. It's for those of us crazies who knit/crochet and have birds as pets.

They're talking about sweatshirts and tote bags now, so when they're ready, I'll be ordering the tote bag for sure.

I agree with you, and mentioned on my post to Melinda as to why this group has dwindled away to just a few regulars.

I understand what you're saying, but for me it actually saves time. I spend a lot of time searching the internet for info about patterns and yarns, and I used to search blogs for info about pattern problems and yarn subs, but the way that Ravelry is set up, it's easy to find info about any of those things quickly.

Also, you don't have to post a question to find the answers. I still enjoy hearing RCTY'er's opinions and am always grateful for the help I receive, but if no one is working on your pattern or has tried your yarn, there won't be answers to that particular question.

For me, it's a great database + a place where I can occaisonally get happy messages from friends like Shelagh.

The reason I believe it will take away from this group and other knitting groups I am on is because people still only have 24 hours a day, and any time they spend there will undoubtedly be taken away from time they spend online in other places.

I'm not saing R** is hte root of all evil or anything. I just have seen other newsgroups that were either fragmented or basically gutted by the startup of web pages, and the newsgroup never seems to recover. For me personally that is a tragedy, because with my ADD I have to stay off web pages as much as possible because it causes me to lose track of time as I follow rabbit trails on the web because I am curious/interested in almost everything on the face of the earth.

Yup I'm one of those people whose ISP doesn't provide access to usenet, I have to use Google Groups and man that's a pain - it's quite buggy.

I'm there as vintagepurls. I don't use the notebook tools that much yet, my excuse is I'm too busy knitting to write about it. :) The pattern database is great. I am also a member or a few groups - there is a nice one for New Zealanders and I met someone who lives in my area and have now joined a really great group of knitters and spinners who meet weekly. I'm keen on the spin tech and fiber prep groups too, lots of geeky discussion about technical aspects of spinning.

What controls does the Yahoo group have that are not in Ravelry?

I think it's more the yahoo group has controls (application for membership) that usenet groups don't have.

The only control Ravelry has right now is the fact it's in beta testing. Because of that, invitations are issued to people solely in the order in which they are received. People are being added in a controlled way so as not to crash servers etc. The way the site runs is still being tweaked by the "code monkey". There are still lots of bugs being worked out. Once you are "in", common sense and decency apply. Pretty much everyone on Ravelry is excited to be there, so there's lots of happy talk and sharing. According to the two people who started Ravelry, it will eventually be totally open to the public. Anyone will be able to access the site, but if you want to post, etc I believe you'll have to have an account (but it's free). They're adamant it will stay free.

Just for info - there are usually at least 500 people or more on Ravelry during the day. Right now, there are 386 on line.

The controls on the Yahoo group are this: There is a moderator who "owns" the group, and I think she has one or two people assisting her. The only way you can access the group is if someone knows you or you are known because you were on RCTY. You have to be approved by the moderator(s). This way no unknown trolls can access the Yahoo group and intimidate the people on it. It's totally closed to the public, and you don't sign up in the usual way.

I hope the info helps

There used to be and probably still are some Usenet groups that are moderated. I used to read one that had to do with the TV show Babylon 5. It was very closely monitored and you had to be very careful about what you wrote.

I am still on a dial-up and can't stand the time it takes for some sites to load.....typepad is the worst IMO which is why I went with a paid via my Webhost Word Press blog...all those cute animated click me banners and buttons on most Knitting blogs really slow down the site loading and I just don't have the patience to wait ;-) but I do have a few blogs that I love to read usually on the weekends when I have more time. I read all my newsgroups first and then venture out on the web. I also applied for a Ravelry account but will use it mostly for patterns and yarn info.

I follow the rabbit trails too and have been late for work too many times.

Trolls are the pits and we had a war in my fave group alt.clubs.just-for-fun from 1998-2000 the reason for the war? We were posting in HTML and were mostly top-posters and OutLook Expressive users. The group did survive but lost many members to private news servers or Webased Message Boards where as you mentioned there was more Control....I didn't like the Controllers or as they really were Censors who relished the Power to delete anything they didn't like. We haven't had a Troll problem for the last 7 years....after they found out we all had Cats they mostly moved on.....we had some help from what are called Troll Controllers also who had befriended us and liked our group. The best is always to ignore Trolls.

Sadly I agree with you on the Usenet newsgroups going away.....I prefer them to anything else...they are text only and load fast....it would be nice to have a group where you could plaintext and post pictures of your work but the Usenet gods that load new groups won't allow that....and many ISP's strip out the graphics from groups other than the ones that have a binaries. designator. Message Boards give the ability to post anything but you have to constantly reload to see replies to your posts and for me it takes longer then Usenet groups so I only sub to a Honda Car Board where I get info on my car once in a while. I guess what I am trying to say is the conversation flow is better and almost realtime here if the posters are online and in the group at the same time.

LOL yes I start looking up knitting and end up looking at dog breed sites
