The most stupid question ever asked

Hi everyone! I want to say my most sincere thank you to all you...You have been such a nice bunch of people to me. Now I have the silliest question ever asked, but this is only because I do not have much experience. So please bear with me.

Do you know the technique called "The Russian Join" ? I know about it. I have heard about it, but I have not tried it myself - yet. I understand how it is done. It looks simple and easy. But I have read something which worries me. You see, the spot where the yarns are joined...Is there such a pattern in which you can clearly see where the yarns were joined? I know...I can not form this question correctly even in Finnish, not to mention in English, but in my heart I believe that someone understands what I mean. Best: Pirjo

Pirjo, thanks for asking about the Russian Join - I printed out the instructions from the link. It looks like it would make a nice smooth joining without knots and bumps.

Also, thanks to the givers of the links, Katherine and Liz !

Bye for now,

Hi! I know it makes a smooth join...but does it...jump to eyes or something once you have done it and knitted past it...or something like that....Let's hope it does not happen that way. I'd love to use it some day. Best: Pirjo

Pirjo, I am knitting scarves and mitts for a project here and I use the Russian join all the time. It has never showed, and I like that you don't have ends to be sewn in afterward.

Hi Norma! Thanks for telling me that. You mean...no matter what stitch pattern you use the join...is there but no one notices it? Best: Pirjo

Pirjo, I use the Russian join almost exclusively, except on thick yarns. The 1 sweater I used it on with a super bulky yarn, the join showed. Therefore, if you have a thick yarn, I would suggest starting a new skein at the seam edge.

Well, if you are using an open pattern stitch, I would arrange the join to be in an area that is closer - I mean where you will be knitting a solid area as apposed to a lacy area. I have to admit that I've only knit with worsted weight yarn. The last time I used a bulky yarn was years ago, before I learned to do this join. I'm the only one who seems to know where the join is. I suppose if people were to try to find it, they could, but most wouldn't even think to try. I actually showed a friend only yesterday, a pair of mitts that I was making and she couldn't see any join even after I told her that I had used the Russian join. (Which she had never heard of) and which I showed her how to do. HTH

How thin a yarn have you used it on? I would think it would be more noticeable on very thin yarn than on medium-weight yarn, mostly because the thinner yarns are used for lacy work.

Hi! I have not used the RJ thing yet. I tried it last night...but somehow I failed...Maybe I just have to practise more of that....I do not know yet. But I will learn it...somehow, someday. Best: Pirjo

I don't do lace work, Tamar, so have not used it on that. Right now, I am knitting a baby blanket with 2 strands of sport yarn. I haven't had to join yet, but will let you know when I do.

Pirjo, thank you for asking that question and thank you, Katherine for the site - I had never heard of this and will now use it - I have always used a very old fashioned way of splitting the two threads but this looks much better God bless Gwen
