Top too short - ideas?

I used the long weekend to finish a cotton top (knit in Knit 1 Crochet

2 Cotonade yarn.) i've been working on this for YEARS. I picked up the neck stitches, joined shoulders, picked up sleeve edgings, and only have the side seams to sew. It's too short. I measured it and it is right for the pattern, but the pattern has a finished length for all sizes of 21" which on my large size just reaches my waistline.

I am knitting a lacy edging to stitch on the bottom edge which may help.

What I wanted to know was - has anyone cut off the ribbing and cast on stitches and successfully knit the other direction for a bit? I have plenty of yarn.

Hi Alison,

This is something I've never done, but I'm trying to figure out how to do it. Why don't you knit a swatch and try it on a small scale, before taking scissors to the sweater. What I'd do is make the swatch, insert a needle or a lifeline above where you planned to cut, and then cut away. I still can't figure how to knit the other direction, but maybe it would become clear once you had it on the needles.

I have done it when puttng on a new ribbing (repairs - don't ask) but I don't know if it would be a smooth transition if this top is knit in something like stocking stitch. Perhaps you might need to insert a band of pattern stitching to cover the transition, otherwise it should work.

I've done it on stockinette and I wasn't thrilled with the end result. It works out much better if you add a ribbing, or an entirely different stitch.

This would be because if you're working in the opposite direction you've moved over 1/2 a stitch and so the effect is of a "jog" in the knitting. Lucille's suggestion of a change in the stitch pattern should help disguise this HTH Love & higs Christine

Alison, I have indeed, when you cut very carfully and take a couple of rows out, I have renewed the ribbing of Otto's sweater that had holes in it. Holes from welding....:=(( It does work, at least it did for me at the time

How long will the lacy edging be?

Hi Katherine - it won't be long enough I don't think by itself. It's about 2 inches. I'll pin it on and try it before I try the extra work of reknitting.

That's too bad. But I have friends who have picked up and knitted down to extend length. It works, but I have never done it.

Alison if the added part +blouse isn`t enough you might consider making an insertion ,,,, to put between blouse and hem lace ,,,, mirjam >

That's a great idea Mirjam (the insertion.) I have done enough of the lace to go about half way around so last night I basted the side seams together and basted the lace on the front and tried it on. It will be ok with the lace (actually it's about 3" at the longest, it's a zig zag pattern). I just have to wear slacks that don't slip down!

Thank you all for the help and encouragement - it's almost done now!
