Very OT: a query for the Brits amoungst us....

What exactly would one mean by saying: "she breathes through her ears" ??? I know how I TOOK it, but it MIGHT've been meant differently... Thanks, Noreen

(I TOOK it as an insult. It was SAID to my mother, about me, by my new B.I.L, who's a Brit AND quite 'different') Noreen

That isn't one I've heard either Noreen so I asked OH. It's new on him too but he would take it to mean she hasn't much between her ears, is brainless, empty headed. It certainly doesn't sound polite.

I could as my son when we chat at the weekend if you like.

BTW, this was said by my brand new brother in law, TO my mother, ABOUT me. I am now looking for a way to tell HIM to go *f* himself in such a way that he'll look forward to the trip! LOL! Noreen

I'll do that Noreen. Probably tomorrow - we usually have a good long chat on a Saturday or Sunday.

What an ignorant little toad! I went looking for sites with suggestions for insults and found

I'm sure you couldfind something suitable there for him - and I bet you have a good chuckleat some of them while you're searching!Personally I'd just ignore him but Rob says I'm a pastmaster at the artfreezing ar****les at 20 paces. I work on the principle that a look cansay more than a diatribe! ;-)

Sounds to me similar to calling someone an airhead.

And, by the way, I'd tell him to take a long walk off a short pier as the tide was going out!

What I AM going to tell him is that the only thing worse than his logic is his manners! and yes, I took it to mean airhead, too. Noreen

One place I googled gave an explanation similar to this: (and no, it's not nice)

That the person talks so much, she must breathe through her ears. To me that makes more sense than "airhead".

Another one had to do with an opera singer..... that she held her notes so long, she must breathe through her ears.

Just ignore him Noreen. It's not worth it.

found this Noreen, someone on a site is having probs finding that she can hear her ear drum going in and out as she breathes and is seeing a specialist for it, and apparently she isn't alone... she writes from this blog archive

>Anyway, the actual condition is called "Patulous Eustachian tube" or PET for short. It certainly is a very rare condition, which is probably why only few doctors know about it, anyway, here's a couple of links that i've just found that seem to confirm what I've written above.>>>>>clip>>>>

Were you singing? It's something people say about really good singers, that you can't tell they're breathing because they hold the notes so long. I've not heard it used as an insult, but he might have meant that you talk too much.

Thank you, Shelagh! That one is actually *rude-er* than the other, but you advice to ignore IS well advised. Noreen

Kirsten Watson. . . He's only met me once, and I had nothing to say to the man. He AND my sister COULD'VE been jealous tho, being that *I* and my cousin Fran were highly complimented at mother's 80th birthday party.... Noreen
