I wonder if maybe they don't bother people who have garments which were *obviously* created using the Brothers Disney® designs. Seems to me if they are going to give Brothers the franchise they would not want to be creating bad will by hassling folks who *use* it. At any rate, what I'm hoping to do is digitize "original" artwork...sort of a "caricature" of each family member.

While I did leave the CR logo on some, Dana said many were obviously home made on the other people. Disney just did not seem to care all that much. There were knock offs everywhere inside and outside the park. All the officials she talked to stated was that they did not want their characters associated with lurid acts. I am sure that if someone were to do this big time, as in manufacturing them in quantity, Disney would be on it in a heart beat, but not a few t-shirts, baby blankets etc. The false press regarding this has done enough damage as it is. I would love to see some of those caricatures.....you have a great time with it, but get familiar with the machine before you tackle digitizing. Its a bit of a pain when you first begin. I switched to Embird Studio a couple of years back and found it to be easier than the one my company sold, but as I remember I did like the Singer software very much.
Yes, I will get right on that! I hope to get software and begin familiarizing myself with that process *soon* too...

It seems to me that by the time you pay to activate all the Embird add-ons, the cost is about the same, and the Singer
*comes* with the read-write box. Decisions, decisions...

I have regular Embird, Studio, and only about 6 alphabets. Cost was about $200 or so. I did not buy all the plug ins because I would never use them. So far (5-6 years) it has been all I needed. Find out about that reader writer. Possibly you could use one like the Janome 300e does, generic and cheap.
The best price I've seen so far for Embird basic, Studio and font engine is in the neighborhood of $400, and I'm still researching the read-write box.

Do you really need Font Engine? I had considered it when it first came out then decided I have dozens of free alphabets so did not get it. Start with the basic Embird and then go from there. I may be all you need.
The trouble is, I don't know *what* I *need*! ;-) I suppose if the cost of activating the additional stuff doesn't increase over time, I could just wait and see.
I haven't really used the font engine much. It seemed like a great idea, but I've found that the fonts don't always sew out that well right off the bat. You have to tweak them, at least that's been my experience. I don't have the time for that right now. I've mostly gone back to the Embird fonts I bought (I have about nine or so). Embird is really the big thing, along with a few alphabets. Iconizer is nice too, and not too expensive. I did use Studio to digitize a crest for my son's fraternity, but it is quite time consuming and I still don't totally understand the program's fine points. Aside from that crest, and a Marine-related design for my father, I haven't used Studio. Maybe I will in the future. The basic Embird allows you to combine and re-size designs and that's enough to keep you going for a long time.

The reason I'm looking for digitizing software is because my daughter is going to create original 'caricatures' of seven family members for me to (I hope) embroidery on shirts for all of us for a trip in the fall. It may or may not happen....
With so many freebies on the net, and the actual ones done for Embird I also have not had to purchase any fonts. Seems like asking here always finds the one I need at the time. Unless your going to do business card type embroidery or logos that need a specific true type font it is pretty well a sure thing you can find it somewhere.. Beverly, Have you been to Annthegran yet? Loads of free things there. Also follow the links from Michael's site to the Designs in Embroidery Mag place. Lots of free stuff there too.
