OT: I have a question for you.

If the media left Angelina Jolie alone, she would be useless to the UN High Commission on Refugees. The whole point of her ambassadorship is that the media swarms around her all the time.

If you were really paying attention, you'd know that it's part of her job to bring the spotlight to Namibia.

And part of serving those people is publicizing their plight. If the media left her alone, she'd be useless to the very people you're applauding her for serving.

I was taught as a child that good deeds should be done in secret if possible and never never to mention, brag etc. At my brothers funeral a few years ago it was wonderful to have people come up to me and tell me in some way that he had helped them. . Occasionally when I go to visit my parents, people from the village will tell me of something my father did for them that was supposed to be between the person and my Dad. But they think I should know what a good man he is. I am never surprised. As I can remember him bring people home to meals who would not have had one otherwise. From him I learned to help now judge never. You just do it , share ones abundance, help where one can People all over the world do it every day that does not make one a hero but a human being. Ruby

As the internet helps old friends find me, I am always impressed what little gestures they remember after all these years. Oftentimes, it was something that I considered a throwaway -- no big deal for me to hug a friend who'd just had a death in the family, but to her it was a lifesaver.

Whoa...all I did was ask a question. I just don't *get* why, when she was so far along in her pregnancy, would she travel to Namibia. I guess many of us are skeptical and think she used the birth of her baby as a way to bring attention to what is happening in that part of the world. Now that makes sense.

Isn't it nice that she can take ***her*** Dr(s). away from their patients/practice when she wanted.

Aaah - at last ! Unfortunately though, I don't believe it will make too much difference. What is it about Africa that people can ignore the most god awful famines and plagues ? Is it the sheer size of Africa ?

In this case, secrecy is no good. The good deed IS the publicity and the hope that other people will follow her example and donate their time and resources to help the poorest of the poor.

I didn't really know if these *Ambassadors* got paid or not - now I know. I realize that she had that job before Brad and that the beautiful people really can raise money and concern for such causes - it's a good thing for sure. I was just making a half-assed joke about no job offer for me - really I was. :-))

Nothing wrong or right about the name. I suspect Shiloh will become very popular in the US for the next 6-10 years for both sexes.

I have gone off and done a little reading about this whole mishigas. At this point, I seriously distrust 90% of what the UN does, especially given the latest sex scandal.

Her motives for heading to Namibia, how ever pure they were, seem illtimed.

DH and I just rented _Mr and Mrs Smith_ last weekend. Quite a pleasant romp. Sort of a high tech _War of the Roses_. Also caught bits of _Lara Croft: Tomb Raider_ while DH was watching it this weekend. I'd say she's a decent actor.

I seriously doubt that you know about 90% of what the UN does, much less know enough about it to mistrust it. It's a humongous organization that does a lot of good and, like most organizations its size, has a few warts. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. It would be like using the fact that some priests are pedophiles to deny that Catholic Social Services is the most effective private social service organization in the US.

As for your editorial, I find the suggestion that Congress provide oversight ludicrous. If the US would simply pay its dues in a timely fashion, the UN might have the wherewithall to solve its own issues.
