OFF TOPIC----what do you call.....

whats the term used when a car needs to be returned to another location and the compay will get someone to do it at no cost, its good for the compay cuz their car is returned to the right location and good for you cuz the trip costs you nothing or very little. my sister did it a few times up and down the west coast. sorry dont know how else to word it. i was thinking a train would be cool so i could see the country but i cant find a good route that isnt 3 or 4 transfers with long layovers, seems silly to me. even flying is at least one change somewhere and long layover. i'd rather drive it and see the country. i checked regular rental and it cost a fortune when you do the return in a totally different state, as well as the rental, insurance and the petrol used. so i thot i'd see if i could find a drive it back to origin thingy. i cant google it without the right words and i'm stuck in limbo on this. thanks in advance if anyone can help me.\ cheers, jeanne

I know a retired gentleman about age 60 who delivers luxury cars for a dealer in the Midwest who sells cars to people all over California and several areas on the east coast. He drives a new Mercedes or Rolls Royce or Porche or other car to the buyer, and drives back with the trade in. Or flies if there is no trade but just a sale. The dealer pays all expenses -- hotels, meals, gas, air fare, etc., plus a token salary of about $75 a day. The dealer and the driver set an itinery so he doesn't drive too many hours or too many miles each day (safer all around). I understand that very few dealers sell and deliver cars across country, and those who do generally only sell very expensive cars, so you may need to check around. And be prepared to have an absolutely clean criminal and driving record. A personal contact or relationship with the dealer will certainly help, too!

I think it was Dollar that we used a couple times........rented at one location and dropped at another without penalty. One time rented in Rochester NY and dropped in Baltimore MD the other time rented in New Orleans LA and dropped in Orlando FL. Check with the different companies. Oh, and try to rent other than at the airport........there you might be charged with additional charges. Don't know what origin and destination points you are looking at on the train but remember, Amtrak is NOT reliable if you are on a tight schedule.

well after finding what i was searching for very late last night i found out it is possible and a good way to travel cept i dont have my own personal motor vehicle report from nz which int'l drivers need to have. so that option is out, bummer, could of been fun.

i'm not gonna drive it at all now. will fly out tomorrow soon as i get to the airport and see what flights have a seat. i did the same leaving SFO east to columbus so should work from here also. i'm getting to see all the southern airporrts. into columbus i flew via charlotte, NC. cool airport with lots and lots old fashioned white rocking chairs to sit on there. i think flights to houston go thru there too so i'll have a good seat while in transit.

called ahead to be sure it was ok to arrive a few days earlier than orig> I think it was Dollar that we used a couple times........rented at one
