OT: Accomodation in New Orleans

I'm looking for a little help. My daughter is travelling to NO (from Australia) this week, and has just received an email from the hotel cancelling her booking. She booked and paid a deposit months ago. This is turning into a nightmare trip. She was going to tour the states for 3-4 weeks with a friend, visiting some of the larger cities. Her friend had to pull out in January, so she decided to go by herself and just do New Orleans (big concert on). Now this. :-(

Does anyone know of a bed and breakfast or something that travel agents might not - everything is booked out. She needs accomodation for the 10th and 11th.

thanks

chris :-)

Did she get her deposit refunded?? ANd did they give a legit reason for canceling it?? Just curious, and I can hunt around if you want me to....

I haven't lived in New Orleans since 1983, nor visited since 1987, so I can't help with the bed and breakfast. I wanted to see if I could find out which concert your daughter was willing to travel all that way for. Maybe my googling skills need help, and maybe the webpage I found was difficult to navigate. Either way, I didn't find it, and I'm curious.

Have you checked the discount travel sites like travelocity.com and the like? They often have great last-minute deals.

Australia) this week...

Google something called the Warm Showers List. It's technically for touring bicyclists. Folks (who are staying-put bicyclists) offer a spare bedroom or floor space.

Also look for local chapters of any clubs to which you belong. Lions, Elks, Kiwanis, Red Hat, bicycle clubs, hikers, Sierra Club, American Youth Hostels. Square dancers. With the internet, this is easier than previously. (I've done this when working a large trade show near Chicago, and found a bicycle club couple one year, and a bike club guy another time.)

Might be a regular on this list who knows of an empty Katrina trailer.

sorry. Forgot to give you my addy. Olwynmary at aol dot com.

The guest room has twin beds, I live 1.5 miles from downtown, the Convention Center, the Superdome and the French Quarter. Also, there is lots of public transport so she can be as independent as she likes.

Olwyn Mary--

i just wanted to comment on what an incredibly generous offer.....

my husband just came home from NO (he's a test pilot for the faa) and while he did not get to see a lot, he loved it....brought me home a cd from a "street musician duo"--actually they played in a cafe he was in...Mother Tongue-really nice music, violin and guitar instrumentals.

anyway, NO is one place i've always wanted to visit....

A few years back (before Katrina) we stayed at the Rathbone Inn, a B+B near the French Quarter. I just checked online and it has expanded to 2 houses and is now called Rathbone Mansions. There are places available March 10-11. The web site is:

We enjoyed it - breakfast was good and the desk clerk (Levi I think his name was) was very helpful- I'd stay there again if we go back to NO for another trip. NAYY Allison

The band is 311. March 11 is, of course, 311 day. :-) See

She's been a fan since the mid ninties and saw them when they toured here as part of a multi band festival (the Vans Warped tour) a few years later. Unfortunately, they don't have the fan base here to warrent a tour on their own, but she did go to Hawaii in 2006 for 3 shows.

thank you all for your help. I've passed on all the suggestions to Catherine. It seems there maybe some problem with her travel agent, so she's going to make some calls herself. The time difference makes it a nuisance but not impossible.

This just reinforces what a wonderful group of people post (and lurk) here. People have done web searches, made phone calls and offered their spare room for a total stranger. So nice to know there are good, kind people in the world.

thank you all

Ah ha! I thought that might be the band! What a great trip for her! My son is a huge fan also. He's been to several shows....but certainly not nearly enough for his liking. I hope it all works out for her.

I honestly know nothing about such bands; but - isn't 311 Joan's son's band? I expect I have remembered it incorrectly, but I think his band has a numerical name and 311 seemed to ring a bell? . In message , chris writes

Yup....you have that right! It must be so cool for her to read about such dedicated fans. My DS went to his first concert alone when he was in high school. Well, not quite alone....the weather was looking funky, so I drove him over to the venue. It was about 70 miles from our house. I waited until it was over and then we drove home in a snowstorm. But it was totally worth it.
