OT Alewives

Anybody know anything palatable to do with alewives?

Looking via google has been less than fruitful for me.

Our lad's grandad fishes, and sends us pounds all summer. Last year we saw considerably less fish. The alewives have got so thick in the lakes it is hard for him to find his usual eating fish. If I tell him we'll take alewives he'll send them on up, but I don't want them until I have a clue what to do with them. All I know is they are a relative of herring.

Sorry no help but I have just been picking hops and saw 'ale' so thought this post must be about beer.

We normally have commercially pickled Herring, though I've also seen it smoked. So, I haven't cooked any. However, since they are a type of Herring, did you try searching for Herring recipes?

OK, I don't know anything about alewives, but I know a very good way to make herring; fried and in a vinegar marinade. For step-by-step instructions, look here. If you're interested I could translate it for you.
