OT Ash Second diagnosis visit

Two should be all it takes.

This time we saw the doctor. The first visit we saw a nurse practitioner whose first comment after the testing was "Well I don't _think_ he's retarded.", well gee...DUH! The doctor seemed to be utterly enchanted by our boy. He was a little confused at first by certain things. For example if he drew a square, Ash would draw a circle and a triangle next to it instead of copying the square. Then he figured out that if he drew a triangle Ash would draw a square and a circle in front of it, he was completeing the sequence rather than mimicing. He was also really impressed by the way Ash would just glance at an item and then write down whatever was printed on it. He muttered something about eidetic or semi-editic memory and group parseing...we will see as our boy grows. He said the diagnosis will be pretty much what we expected. Autistic spectrum, primarily language affected. He is going to recomend that Ash get a LOT more speech therapy, and that visual communications aids be employed. He listened when we told him about all three clues for pizza and suchlike stuff. The school has just sort of blown it off. He would also love to see Ash again next year, since he also said that he would really like to see how he has come on when he hits his teens that may become an annual thing. Not that we would have to go, but that the doctor would like to track how Ash does. Research and stuff.

Excellent! Sounds like at last you are getting somewhere. Now to see if the education department provides what he needs once the official bits of paperwork are done! THAT may be the hardest thing of all, and a war of attrition rather than a single battle.

Best of luck with it!

That's excellent news Nightmist. It sounds as though you have a doctor willing to spend some time with Ash, and ultimately do what is right for your child. Best of luck to all of you - and I hope the school will abide by the Doc's recommendations.

Sounds like your Ash is a smart cookie. I hope he gets all the intervention he needs to have him grow into his full potential, which seems promising.
