OT: Australia, the Land of Flooding Rains!

No longer a Sunburnt Country! A quick update on the Queensland floods. Brisbane and surrounding regions have moved into the clean up phase. The waters are receding. Better news, as such, from grim predictions of 70+ missing revised down; 16 dead and 50 missing. The wild weather system has passed with fine days forecast. Australians are very resilient with a high community spirit in tough times. 86 towns and cities are affected; 17,000 homes inundated. However, other states are now experiencing floods. Good grief. Victorian countryside have severe flooding, and I think Tasmania and South Australia have some problems also. On my local front; our region 100km south of Brisbane was not affected; however there is a knock-on affect of goods and services being curtailed and we are experiencing food shortages in the supermarkets. Some panic buying was not useful! I am about to head out to a farmers' market of local growers. I have plenty of meat in the freezer and the pantry is always well stocked in this household!

Must run, Hugs to all Bronnie

We have had an unreal amount of rain this week. Over two nights we have had a total of 132mm (5 inches), our average for Jan is 32mm for the month. Some of the towns to the north of us are flood affected and are on flood watch, towns further away are more severely affected. Unheard of for the middle of summer. I just hope that other states are not forgotten.

Bronnie, Glad to hear things for you personally are going well. So sorry to hear and see about all the devastation for the rest of the folks in your area. Hopefully you will not be suffering too severe shortages for too long. I know the panic a couple of inches of snow creates here...I can't imagine what must be happening there knowing that goods/ services will be affected for a period.

Keep us posted when you can.

Dee, Hopefully this is not a portent of things to come for you as well.

My foster-sister lives at Rochester and they have been told to evacuate - they are sand-bagging their home as I type and really don't want to move. The quilt shop in Rochester was OK as at 1.00pm but the water was thigh high deep at that time. The Campaspe river is expected to peak at 11.00pm tonight. The water is coming up through the drainage system because it has nowhere else to go.

Please pray for Australians - it is very distressing for all of us.

I wondered how she was fairing Di. Rochester is such a pretty place.

Thanks Dee,

Last time I spoke with her the water was coming up the driveway to her home. That was about 1.30pm because she had just got home from the quilt shop after trying to put everything up higher.

I am very worried because they have their house on the market and it is really beautifully setup, great gardens.

The news reports/photos we're getting are horrifying - - - you can rebuild a house, but your family treasures cannot be replaced!. Hugs and prayers are on their way to Australia! ME-Judy
