OT: Dillard's Rant

My RANT mode is in high gear!!!! I am TOTALLY ticked off at Dillard's, and (IMNSHO), for good reason! My DSis works for Dullard's and she has *some* stories to tell. It seems that the guy who manages the Dillard's where she works (in Austin, TX) has started a new "program". All sales employees (those people who actually sell you the clothing, etc.) are REQUIRED to get two customers to fill out a new Dillard's credit application EACH MONTH! If you don't get the two new apps. each month, then you ***have to go*** to "Boot Camp" on Sunday morning. If you don't go to the boot camp, then you get an "unexcused absence" (sounds like grade school, doesn't it?) and after a certain number of unexcused absences, they can fire you! As if that's not bad enough, the people who apply don't even get any incentive to actually use the card! When we bought the new 'puter last week, we were give 10% off if we filled out an application for a credit card. Obviously, DH filled out the paperwork and we got a nice discount on the 'puter. Seems that at Dillard's, if you get a credit card, you don't get any sort of incentive to actually *use* the card until AFTER you have used the card and gotten your first bill! Then you get some sort of discount to use the next time you USE THE CARD! I'm sorry, but I'll have to agree with my DSis -- Dillard's is CHEAP! I'll use my AmEx and get my frequent flyer miles, thank you very much! Also, I'm wondering just how legal it is for Dillard's to do this sort of thing?!?!? DSis is paid to sell clothes and keep her shelves stocked and the area looking a particular way -- not "sell" Dillard's credit cards! ())$(*$@)&@$^^&*((&*^& economy doesn't help much either! Rant Off

It sucks but Dillards can do anything they want. Especially in Texas where they were born... but wait. I thought Macy's BOUGHT Dillards? I may have dreamed that.

If your SIL has experience, she should go apply at Nordstrom's. They used to be the best to work for in retail.

JC Penney's does the same thing. That's why my daughter no longer works there. She quit before they could fire her.

What strikes me is that by forcing people to attend that boot cam on Sunday morning means they may miss opportunity to go to the religious service of choice. Sounds like a civil rights issue to me. PAT in VA/USA

Howdy!

Mr. Dillard started his retail biz in Arkansas, on to Tennessee, back to Ark., before he moved into Texas. ;-P Btw, the corp. headquarters are in Arkansas, too. (Macy's [Federated] bought out several stores, including Marshall Field's, Foley's, Filene's and other May stores. Dillard's Inc. owns Dillard's.)

One of my best friends quit Dillard's earlier this year, after almost 15 yrs. there; she has no regrets about leaving. We are former D's card holders; didn't like their policies, don't need their credit line (didn't use the card so don't miss it).

Many companies have those "sign up the customer" campaigns. If not credit cards, then warranty policies. Austin has a pretty good job market right now.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch:

i think Macy's owns several stores. Federated Stores owns alot too. my DD works at JCP too. their store has a new mgr. he is a real piece of work. his new thing is that all the employees have to wear their name tag on a lanyard. DD works in Home Dept, and does alot of box opening/shelf stocking, etc. she almost got hung the other day! i called and complained for her (as a concerned citizen of course!) i think each store can pretty much make their own rules as long as "Corporate" rules arent bent too much. sux. Glad i'm in Healthcare!! (yes,,,,pun intended!)

I just phoned DSis and reminded her to tell "them" that she couldn't attend the Boot Camp because it is on Sunday AM when she is at church! Never thought about that!! To make matters even worse, DS has worked at Dillard's for years now (she's divorced, late 50's, work exp. is in hotel/motel which pays worse than retail!). She applied for a promotion which she **would** have gotten except for one thing. She would have been required to take a turn working the 11:30 am Sunday shift. Her church services END at 11:30 am so she wouldn't be able to get there until noon. As a result, she can NEVER get any sort of promotion unless she agrees to work that 11:30 am Sunday shift. She's thinking about taking the promotion and attending services at a different congregation on the Sundays she would have to work. The only problem is that the other congregations with services early enough are a fair distance away and the services are in Spanish or Korean! VBS -- wish I would win the lottery -- LOLOL! Last year, Macy's had my favorite brand of bra's on sale, so I purchased a couple. The sales person told me if I used my Macy's card, I would get an additional 15% off. (The bras are expensive, so every additional discount was worthwhile.) I hadn't used my Macy's card in ages, because we put everything on Visa. When the sales person tried to get my Macy's charge account number, she was told it was inactive, due to me not using it. She asked if I wanted to reopen my Macy's account & I said yes. She never mentioned that I was going to get a Macy's VISA card, & not a Macy's store card. I was shocked when a Visa card arrived in the mail. I cancelled it immediately, but I really felt like she had put one over on me. (Not a big Macy's fan anyway - it's not the store it once was!)

That isnt unusual. Same thing happened to me here with Zellers. From a store CC to a Visa because I hadnt used it in some time and they "updated" my information. Lo and behold in a week I had a brand new Visa card from them not a store CC. Gotta watch out for the fine print I guess...

We've been watching this credit card pressure with great interest. (Well, sure, we're retired and have time to pay attention.) The news guys would have you believe that they are not issuing new cards and are charging higher interest. Apparently, the card I use for online purchases is ambitious for business - they gave me a 10% credit off of our entire balance due. Very curious. ??? Annoying is the checks they send me to cash for only (read the fine print) a tremendous charge and interest rate. I give those checks a nice long soak in whatever drinking glass is sitting in the kitchen sink until I can roll them in a hard tight ball. If someone tosses our trash for the checks and the gators don't get them, they'll really going to have to be creative to cash them. I do wish I could discourage them from issuing those. Polly

Wow, a 10% discount -- makes you wish you'd made that big purchase that month, doesn't it?

I phoned my credit card people and told them I no longer wanted to receive the checks. If you look on the checks next time you get them, there should be some VERY FINE PRINT at the bottom or on the back giving you this option with a phone number to call. The person I talked to did their very best to talk me out of opting out of the whole check thing but I stood my ground. Besides, if you never use the checks, not having the bank send them helps cut down on the amount of trash you generate! That's the stand I took and the person couldn't hardly argue with it -- LOLOL! When we bought this new 'puter last week, the kid told us we could get 10% off if you signed up for the store credit card. DH signed up and said he will just cancel the credit card once it came. Dillard's is apparently so cheap that the don't offer ANY sort of immediate incentive if you sign up for their credit card! You have to wait until you have used the card and then when you get your bill, they give you some sort of coupon to use the next time you use your Dillard's card. CHEAP -- DSis has always told me how cheap the store policies are and I can't argue with her! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I asked to have the checks stopped, and they did. Also asked (last week) to have my limit lowered to where it was (I didn't ask them to raise it; "in these economic times" when credit is supposed to be tougher- ?) and they complied. And one old company kept checking my credit report every month! so I cancelled the card, which I hadn't used in 2 yrs anyway; I love my Kenmore appliances but don't need their card to buy them. We don't carry a balance; no finance charges here, thanks.

The paper shredder produces some wonderful compost material (no plastic envelope windows, please). Seems appropriate to add it w/ the cow manure. ;-P
