OT Finnicky QI.....

Hi! My question is: Why me old cat won't eat? She's very old. Between 18 & 25 years old. I had her on Iams regular. Then I get the bright (NOT!!) idea that she's old & should have some canned cat food as a treat (Got her Fancy Feast) She liked it TOO MUCH!! To the exclusion of the dry. Friend got some Newman's Own. She refuses to eat it AT ALL!! I have ruled out mouth problems. She's still bright eyed & active. Is this a battle of awills between me & a snobby cat? Or do I have to get rid of this canned cat food, & buy more Fancy Feast? I don't want her to starve to death!! Should I wait it out or go & get the other food?

HELP!!! PLEASE???

Nana TIA

Are you sure she her teeth are fine? They could be starting to fall out or coming loose. If so, maybe the Fancy Feast is the easiest on her sore teeth. My 17 year old cat lost his teeth in about 2 months time. Took me a while to clue in to what was wrong.

And as my Vet told me..........she's lived a good live and deserves the finer food in life

The more something smells tasty, the more you want to eat it, right? Same with cats. Canned food has a lot more smell than dry. She's trying to tell you she wants that wonderful smelling, super tasty food. Get her some more canned food and she will be happy. Debra in VA See my quilts at:

Oh! Debra!! Thanks. I am now 'offering' her Newman's Own, which she is flatly refusing to eat AT ALL!! It is soft & believe me it doesn't smell as if it could be spoiled!! I leave it there all day. I throw it out after it has sat there all day. I don't think it is good anymore. I can not afford to spend money on more food PLUS the price of gas to go & get it!!

Nana....May as well just toss it in the trash unopened

My two older cats both enjoy a treat of Iams dry for sensitive stomachs which I alternate with other types of Iams flavours. I also feed all of them with canned foods - all four cats have a flavour favourite (fishy, chicken or beef) that they have to wait turns for their own particular one to be opened - it works well. I have also tried putting out senior brands of canned food - trouble is that Winston liked that one too much and he's only 2yrs old - last week, I 'found' 2 cans of kitten food - they all liked those when I used them up! With the Fancy Feast delicacies available, your old girl could be eating a new flavour every day for a month and you still wouldn't know which one was her favourite! Newman's Own has a lot of vegetable content - some of the changes in 'healthy' eating for pets now involves more fibre ingredients as well as yoghurt (waste of money around here) they discussed it after trying it and all four decided to avoid the healthy bits (they are left in the bowl and when I clean out the crumbs - they end up in the squirrel bin). jennellh

Maybe she needs a check to see if her teeth/mouth are okay? What prompted you to move from the dry food to canned? She probably decided that if you want to feed her canned, it should be something she likes, not what smells the least ;)

She's the cat. It won't matter what you do, she's the boss. As far as she's concerned the kitchen staff have actually got it right and found her ideal food choice AT THIS TIME. ;) Your traditional feline in the wild wouldn't give a vegetable the time of day. Ever seen a lion fanging into a celeriac? So perhaps that's why she won't eat the Newmans. After a long time on a bland diet perhpas she was just hanging out for a tasty change. My cats often had fussy periods but got over them. Just had to be patient. We sort of mixed the old and new together until they reverted back. None of them ever starved to death. When we got married DH had a cat that thought "food" was Purina Cat Chow. Nothing else was really "food", not even canned tuna or canned food. She might eat other stuff, but she let us know that it wasn't what she considered proper and right. Right now we have way toooooooooo many cats/kittens in the house. Need to find homes for several, and get some others just plain out of the house. Momma cats were having some problems, so we started to wean the little ones, and supplement the mommas, with a bit of canned food at bedtime. Now about that time I become very popular. Have a herd following me around and into the kitchen. It is sort of cute, but we really need to find homes for these loving kittens who love being with people and are "indoor" cats. sigh. (wrong time of year..... even the Humane Society is saying that they would be put down because they are too full.)

I've got 4 cats and they all have different things they like. One loves kitty treats, the other 3 won't touch them. 2 like tuna-other 2 won't touch it. Some like Iams dry, while others prefer Purina. NONE of them like any of the canned foods, expensive or cheap. Just like people, they have their own preferences. If she was happy with one brand, why on earth worry if she doesn't like the others. My overweight fat cat eats only dry food, never with seafood. Iams made Lilly all twitchy and allergic. Yep, they are all different.

Once my animals got canned food, they "refused" to go back. If she were younger, I'd say wait her out, but for goodness sakes, give her the food she likes. Not eating is going to be TERRIBLY unhealthy for her. She can't have much reserves.

Get to the store and buy that kitty her food. Donate the other stuff to a shelter or something. Don't throw it away. Pet food manufacturing is pretty well regulated. It's not spoiled, just not her taste.

She's old. She deserves to eat anything she wants.

Cats don't think the same way we do. If you are happy to go on feeding them, do so. Feral or semi feral cats like these will never settle to become house cats. They have everything they want: freedom and food.

But some domestic cats think fresh veggies are da bomb!

Jiji-chan actually ran off with the pot of cat grass, much to the annoyance of the other cats. Now one of his great goals in life is to slip out into the hallway the second the door opens and chew on my east indian lemon grass. All indoor plants are in a perpetual state of quarantine because Jiji loves them so.

Cornflake likes to chew plastic things like coat hangers, and electric cables... Phone and PSP charger cables, the camers download cable, and other such items being favoured with toothprints...

I don't have house plants here. There's plenty of grass and stuff outside for the mogs to chew on when it takes their fancy. My old Marmalade used to like the herbs, and came in ponging of thyme and garlic...

Pati, check around with local rescue groups, vet clinics, animal shelters, etc. We have a program here in my county for 'low income' families to get free spay and neuter services for both cats and dogs. Sometimes they have rather odd requirements- when I took Hoover in to be neutered the program was for young male dogs (under 3 y.o.) that hadn't had a rabies shot in the past twelve months. I didn't know for sure with Hoover since he was a rescue, so the vet said another rabies shot wouldn't hurt him. I got both the neutering and the rabies shot free- plus his three follow-up check-ups since he was naughty and tore at the incision. And the 'low income' qualification? For a couple with no children the max. income is $55K- not 'low' at all- and I more than qualified! LOL The point of all this is that you maybe able to get the cats fixed at little or no cost.

The two 'little' cats will only eat dry food (unless it is 'real meat' cooked for humans!). Hodge prefers tinned or individual sachets of 'wet' cat food.

If Kiwi smells Hodges food he thinks it is DISGUSTING and paws the ground as though he is trying to cover it up!

LOL, Sally. I'd forgotten about that 'pawing'. Our beloved big Tom kitty thought dog food was very offensive and was always wanting to bury our little Yorkie's dinner. Polly
