OT how do you cook bacon

I like bacon but I hate cooking it. So I only give in maybe once or twice a year. I've tried the cooking sheet in the oven. Restaurants here do it that way. It works good but makes a real mess of your oven. So I want to know how you cook your bacon? Is there a way to cook it without getting the grease everywhere? Thanx Joanna

Do you have a microwave? That's the fastest and easiest for clean up. You simply put a folded in half paper towel on a plate (paper or other), place some strips of bacon on the towel and cover them with another paper towel. How long and what power level? Well. That depends on your microwave. Ours can turn anything into a fossil in less than a minute. Begin with one minute at about 7 power and continue until you're there. To keep the microwave fresh and clean: put about 6 cups of water in the big Big measuring cup; add a splash of lemon juice and let it come to a boil in the microwave. Leave the door closed for a little while after you've 'cooked' your lemon/water. The resulting steam will help you when you just wipe down the insides later. HTH Polly

Black cast iron skillet with a screen over it.

Recently, I acquired a cast iron griddle with raised ribs across the griddle, specifically for frying bacon. We love it, and can still use a screen over it though the fit's not that great.

To be honest, my SO cooks and eats most of the bacon in our house -- I learned from him.

Oh Polly, are you ever in trouble with The HairyButt Gang! I usually fry my bacon and they each get a tablespoon of the grease. I made bread yesterday and had a couple of tomatoes left in my garden, so I *had* to have a BLT for lunch- with microwaved bacon.

They are still lined up sitting in the kitchen waiting for their bacon grease. Do ya think I can teach them to suck the bacon grease from the paper towels?

I hate cooking it because of the spitting... on *me*. I use a covered frying pan, and then drain it on a sheet or two of paper towel on a paper plate.

No, they'll (the dogs, anyway) most likely just scarf the towels down. It's probably not all that good for them either, but that's your choice.

uhhhhh, Doc.... I was joking about the paper towels! ;-) I take excellent care of my hairy children and don't allow anything around them that might cause them any type of harm. Well, other than hugging them a little too tightly- but they've never complained much about those hugs! They just squirm a bit.

cast iron skillet with a grill press to keep the bacon flat. Years ago I read that if you sifted a thin dusting of flour on the bacon, it wouldn't 'spit'--haven't tried that though.--

i use a non stick frying pan, heat on low and cook till crisp, drain on ppr towels or brown bags. it takes a little longer, but no splatters and the non stick is a breeze to clean.

I don't. I just indulge in a bacon sarnie after swimming at the pool cafe, and let them bother with the grease and spitting! ;)

too often bacon has water added to it to increase the weight, thereby making more money. that water when it hits the fat will spit. i'm guessing the flour absorbs the water thus eliminating the spit factor. just the first thot i had when reading this tip. never heard that one but will give it a go next time we have bacon, which isnt all that often. we have a couple of cast iron skillets. no grill press but do have a flat aluminium lid that fits all our skillets nicely, has vents to let steam escape. it keeps those spits under control.. j.

I have a dish "made especially for the microwave" with ribs, to cook and drain the greese from the bacon. I cover with a paper towel. The dogs get the greese drizzled on the dry dog food and they love it! But I rarely cook bacon! Barbara in SC

I spent 6 months of 1983 with a microwave and the sink in the bathroom as my kitchen. Kitchen fire. An awful way to learn microwaving. I will never proclaim that the microwave is the only way or the best way to cook everything. I also spent 6 weeks after Karina cooking on a tiny charcoal grill. " That which does not kill us will merely maim us." quoting Celia Rivenbark in 'We're Just Like You' recommended by our Patti in Seattle now in Tampa and a really happy book. Polly

Just for you Joanna I tried this method this morning. Place bacon in a cold non stick fry pan place on heat and cook to desired doneness ( as Polly would say a technichal term). I didn't have any spitting but YMMV.

I cook it in the oven. Lay it out on a rimmed baking sheet. Turn it when it starts to brown on the underside. Bake to desired crispness and drain bacon on paper towels.

Easy and no splatters. Also, it cooks nearly unattended so you can do other breakfast things.

When I had a hungry boy living at home I would cook a bunch and keep the extra in the refrigerator. It warmed up very quickly in the microwave for breakfast or sandwiches.

I don't. If I get a burning desire to have it, I have it next time I am out at a restaurant. [Doesn't happen very often]
