OT: Hurricanes and wedding plans

My nephew is getting married..... this coming Saturday. It will be an outdoor ceremony.

He is getting married in FORT LAUDERDALE FLORIDA.

Sigh.....

We have 5 plane tickets from NJ to Fl leaving Friday afternoon. My DH wanted a vacation, so we have a timeshare reserved for the following week close by in Singer Island.

My nephew really wants us to come despite the warnings. He is sure that the storm(s) will pass right by. I'm not so optimistic. I really question the advisability of flying directly into the path of a hurricane and staying on the eastern shore of Florida for ten days, but hey, I could be overreacting. After all, I live in the north east, where hurricanes DO blow, but rarely do the damage they do down south.

Opinions, anyone? Does anyone live on the east coast, that could give me a heads up as to what is really going on?

The NHC shows a path through the Bahamas and then in to South Carolina by Friday night. It is looking like less of a threat to any portion of Florida but a good deal of the eastern half of the state is within the forecast error cone. This means that Floridians will need to monitor Hanna but not overly worry right now. I am most concerned with South and North Carolina - and of course Georgia.

My friends in Charleston are on alert. They are headed here to Houston in 2 weeks. Assuming Hannah and Ike don't change those plans...with any kind of luck, Hannah will lose strength and just dump a lot of rain into Georgia, SC and NC's very dry lakes.... One can hope?

Seems to me that your chances of having a wonderful trip are slim to none. You might not be in grave danger but very probably you'd have 10 days of stormy weather. Hurricanes simply refuse to adhere to a path or schedule. They are not our standard 42" wide; can be as much as 200 miles wide and Hannah could easily torment the coast of FL for days. I'm not sure I'd go. Polly

My sister-in-law got married the day before Wilma blew through. It couldn't be cancelled or postponed as the bride's family was coming from England, and the bridegroom's family from Canada! We all holed up in a hotel for the hurricane and survived just fine! Be prepared to change location to one with power after the event.

Thanks, Lizzy. I think I'll try and go to the wedding. It could end up being a family legend, and a good bonding experience. I think, like Polly said, the vacation afterward would be miserable. I have to see if I can change the timeshare reservations.

Hey L, I live in Boca Raton and my DIL's live on Singer Island. You won't be far from us at all, about 45 minutes (30 miles). We are not anticipating any Hanna issues other than some rain. Your wedding may not make an outside event, but yuou won't have to worry about hurricanes. Don't stick around for Ike though. That one may be mean.

Have fun at the wedding. Singer Island is a nice strip of condos. The beach is nice and there is plenty of shopping around.
