OT: I Lost My #1 QI Today

Yoda was a scraggly 6-toed kitten my son brought home in 1993. DS left home long ago, but Yoda stayed. He was so named because he had huge ears and a pointy face. When you folded his ears down, he looked for all the world like the Star Wars character.

He'd been sick for months, and I knew when I got up this morning it was "time." He was clearly suffering and I already knew the vet's bag of tricks was used up. Yoda was old, his organs were old, and they were failing him. I took him to the vet to be euthanized. The literal definition of euthanasia is "good death." And I have to say, it was the best euthanasia I have ever witnessed. In life Yoda was a most pampered feline. His death was extraordinarily peaceful and calm. Every cat should be so lucky to die with dignity, with love, the best drugs money can buy, and snoring on the arm of someone who really loved him.

I just am missing that cat already something fierce. After seventeen years, I am not sure I can quilt without Yoda.

So sorry for the pain you are going through Sherry. You been together for a very long time. There is no easy way to go through the parting. You will find a way to go on quilting - perhaps a special quilt in his honour will get you started again after a little while. .

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,

that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends

so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine,

and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.

Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,

just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;

they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops

and looks into the distance.

Her bright eyes are intent.

Her eager body quivers.

Suddenly she begins to run from the group,

flying over the green grass,

her legs carrying her faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,

you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head,

and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,

so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It is so tough to say goodbye to such loyal friends.

I'm so sorry. He was a wonderful companion, and will leave a big gap.

Try making a memory quilt of him. It might ease the pain ans help close the gap.

Your decision was the greatest gift you could give to show him your love. How lucky you both were to have each other.

Hi Sherry,

It's been a few months for us now, though at times it seems like just yesterday. We've been able to move on (or keep going), but the transition is... very strange. We've lost each one in a different manner. Sadie (border collie) went like Yoda; expected and prepared for (as much as anyone can be) from old age. I think most of the group feels connected at times like this.

Every cat? No, every pet - perhaps every sentient creature. Humans should be so fortunate.

Sherry, Soooo sorry. I feel your pain particularly acutely as we just had to put down our beloved Nugget last week. He was our 12 year old chocolate lab that we have had since birth. I just picked up his ashes yesterday. Sewing/quilting has been very theraputic for me these last few days as the house is entirely too quiet now. Hopefully it will become that for you as well.

Oh my goodness; I am just overwhelmed by such kind and understanding responses. I knew this group was particularly pet-compassionate. I would almost say that most quilters are animal lovers, except people I know IRL not only don't understand cat-grief, they don't even understand why I put up with the cat hair everywhere. Thank you again. So much. I keep reading this stuff over and over even though I am blubbering by end of it. I nearly didn't post this. I am so glad I did.

Not all animals are fortunate enough to become pets, but Yoda hit the jackpot when he came to live with you. He was a loyal companion, and you were a good mom. And you gave him a wonderful gift - you made a tough decision but knew it was time to say good-bye. He left this world knowing he was loved, and that's the best gift ever.

Sherry, I'm so sorry about Yoda. Too many of us know the pain of losing a beloved and loving QI, no matter what the breed. {{{Hugs}}}
