OT: Identity Warning

I am posting a copy of an e-mail I received. This started last year, but you should all know about it (don't know if this only affects those of us in the US or all of you). Scary thing-- they have me at my address, my ex's address and at the address of a friend who owns a condo with me.

A friend sent this to me. I checked this out myself, it is real. Anyone can search on a social security number and/or name and for 50 bucks get enough information to steal your identity. But you can find anyone for free and drive right to their house with the maps provided. They ought to throw these people in jail.

You can check it out, too, at snopes.com at this link.

Beginning this month (JULY '06) a new database will be available to the general public free of charge that displays your personal information (names, addresses, phone numbers, birth dates). (Soc. Sec. is available for a price.) The database is found at

type in your name and check, ... you'll be SHOCKED as I was. Check to see if your name and information is in their database. If so and you want it removed, send them an e-mail at snipped-for-privacy@zabasearch.com to request it be removed. I urge you to forward this Email to family and friends.

After opting out by Email, check back after a few days to make certain your information has been removed. If it has not been removed then file a complaint with your State's Attorney General.

Its really only a compilation of readily available information from public sources like the phone book and property tax rolls. Its just that this stuff hasn't been all in one place before or so easily click-on-able.

On the plus side, most of the links under your name will just pull up ads for "fee for service" places (that have existed for a long time but haven't been able to advertise so easily.)

Another plus is that the info is really not very up to date. My FIL passed away over 10 years ago and they still list his address (house has been re-sold at least twice) and phone number. Methinks he is too busy playing a harp or chasing angels to bother to pick up ;-)

The info is also pretty inaccurate -- my daughter's SIL is listed at: apartment she rented as a student, her parent's house, apartment she and her DH rented, house she and her DH bought, and my daughter's house (because she had mail forwarded there once while she was on vacation). So, click on the map and try to visit her but those addresses are scattered over two states and 5 cities :-)

Opt out of this site if you like, but remember to have your unlisted phone number put ex-directory as well and rent a P.O. Box for all your mail ...

If you have a car tag, marriage license, driver's license, voter registration or =) criminal record, all of that information may be easily available to anybody. I've noticed that lately, my prescription bottles even carry my former employment info. Privacy Act? What privacy? Polly

And you know, when my DD was in the hospital trying very hard to give birth, there was a woman in the next room who was vocalizing very loudly with each labor pain she was experiencing. I mean loud! She was there for most of the time my DD was, but gave birth first - as most of the woman on the floor did that day! When I asked the nurse what she had, she told me she was prohibited by HIPPA from telling me! Anyone who has had any kind of medical or dental activity in the last year has signed extra paperwork for HIPPA which is supposed to protect your medical identity but is really the "paperwork enhancement act". So, I can find out who you are, who you're married to, used to be married to, where you live, what you drive, what pets you have, who lives near you, your age, your birthday, your driver's license number and social security number. But I still don't know if that poor woman next door to my DD in the hospital had a boy or girl!!!! Go figure!

Heck with a little effort you can get a satellite pic of some folks back yards. It might be a little out of date. When DH demonstrated for an online friend the guy noticed that the car in the driveway was one he'd had some 3 years previously. Still you can dig out an awful lot on anybody with very little effort, no special website needed.

DH had the heart attack when they were starting in on the HIPPA stuff. It became quite a PITA when I was trying to get things taken care of, prescriptions and such. If you are married it is a good idea to sign the papers at the drs. office BEFORE you have a problem.
