It originally meant the country of the Scotti.
Who were originally Irish and never occupied more than 10% of the country.

I'm a Scot too and Scotland just means land of the Scots. Never heard if referred to as "shadows of heaven". It was also known as Caledonia by the Romans. morag

"Scotland is from the Latin Scoti, the term applied to Gaels. The Late Latin word Scotia (land of the Gaels) was initially used to refer to Ireland. By the 11th century at the latest, Scotia was being used to refer to (Gaelic-speaking) Scotland north of the river Forth, alongside Albania or Albany, both derived from the Gaelic Alba.[16] The use of the words Scots and Scotland to encompass all of what is now Scotland became common in the Late Middle Ages.[10]"
aha - thanks Irene - I bet that's where the lady got the reference. I met her last week -she'd named her child Scotland because she'd heard an association made between the word and the phrase Musicmaker
