We're thinking we may give Yogi just Cheerios and chicken until this has been resolved. The rest of you may return to your regularly scheduled quilting. Polly

I am on the Purina mailing list and I received an e-mail saying that Purina is voluntarily recalling Alpo Alpo canned dog food. Here is the entire letter (well, without the color letterhead) .........

ALPO® BRAND PRIME CUTS IN GRAVY CANNED DOG FOOD VOLUNTARY NATIONWIDE RECALL

No Dry Purina Products Involved

March 31, 2007

On March 30, 2007, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities.

Consumers should immediately stop feeding their dogs ALPO Prime Cuts products with the date codes listed below and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet.

The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-,

12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.

Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall ? including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply.

At Purina, nothing is more important to us than the health and well-being of the pets whose nutrition has been entrusted to us by their owners, and we deeply regret this unfortunate situation. We will continue to take any and all actions necessary to ensure the quality and safety of our products.

Please see our March 30 press release for more information and click here for an updated list of Frequently Asked Questions. If you have more questions or concerns, please contact our Office of Consumer Affairs at

1-800-218-5898.

Back to me -- be sure to remember that the recall does NOT include ANY dry pet food or any pet food other than the ALPO brand name. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Oh no! I don't think you're crying "wolf" at all. This is *scary*. We feed Purina products and up until now, I mistakenly thought all their products were exempt from the recall.

LOL! Our Doxie used to know *exactly* what a drive-thru was for, too!

You're not crying wolf, Polly!

My dogs eat mostly dry dog food, but occasionally I treat them to a can of wet food. They love it. Last night I bought a couple of cans of Alpo Prime Slices, that's what they like the best. I just looked at the can I have left and it is the right plant number, but the issue date is later. But still, I can't know for sure that it's safe and I will guarantee I have fed them the "tainted" food in the last few weeks.

Scary. I don't like to feed my dogs people food because I knew it spoiled them for their balanced dog food. Sometimes I boil chicken and mix the meat with brown rice for them, but I don't think they could live on that.

What's a person to do?

Polly, I don't think you're unduly alarmed. We all love our babies, human or otherwise, and we'd be horrified to discover that we'd been feeding them tainted food. Keeping us all updated is a public service. Right now I'm very grateful that we feed Dexter kibble, adding "people food" to it on a judicious basis as a special treat and to give him some variety. I just ache for those people whose pets have been lost because of this awful problem.

Well, my big dog (Akita mix) eats mostly dry crunchy food, and I get liver, kidneys, etc. from the butcher, and boil that up and run it through the big food grinder (think hand crank like granny used to use to make relish). Healthy for Nikki, freezes well, and no chance of factory-type contaminations. Smells nasty while boiling, but I just open a window.

And I used to give both Tuppence and Dexter some of those jerky treats sometimes after their daily brushing. Dexter wasn't very fond of them, so I've stopped since Tuppence's death -- but Tuppence loved them. Now I wonder if the people in charge are wrong about kidney failure being the only result of this contamination; Tuppence died of liver failure. Of course, her death may have been totally unrelated.

insanity rules yet again. i've just checked nz govt websites for any media news releases on this here and could find none. as we import a lot of some food types...probly wheat too, i emailed the govt dept here about it and asked what they know, what they've told the nz public and if they've told us nothing new about this situation here, when are they going to tell us. argh, the mind boggles. wheat gluten could well come into smaller countrys and be used in making bread, a staple food item in many countrys. those too small to grow enough of their own will import from various countrys. as this seems to be coming in from china, is it safe to eat rice from there, another grain product. eeeeeeek. ok ok, i'm not panic'n just worry'n a bit. aint noth'n to mess with. jeanne

I have been so freaked out by this pet food recall, I'm just beside myself. My boyz don't get any wet food, just dry, and I get it at one of those "all organic, health food for pets" places, and so far, there hasn't been anything. I sincerely hope no one has had any health issues with their QI because of this. It certainly is frightening........

My daughter has two miniature greyhounds, Amber and Chloe. I used to chide her because she would miss a meal if it meant she couldn't buy the fixings for their homemade food. But, now I think she may have been onto something here! She buys bulk chicken parts and boils them in a minimal amount of water. After it is all cooked she painstakingly pulls off every bit of chicken. She then buys large bags of mixed vegetables and cooks them and then adds the chicken to them. Her dogs love it. She can make enough for a week and refrigerates it. A minute or two in the microwave and it's good to go. Of course, everyone else in the house is vegetarian!
