specifically someone who does hip arthrosopy, I need to get a 2nd opinion and so far research has not show up anyone in state and the busyiness of the guy who I did see kind of backs that up and we're in the most populous area of the state, so even anywhere else in state seems unlikely, so I'm spreading the net country wide. Cheers Anne
Where are you and how far are you willing to travel? Mayo Clinic surely has someone who does it; they have facilities in Jackonsville FL and Scottsdale AZ, in addition to their main clinic in Rochester MN. For more information on Mayo, go to . Click on "Appointments" at the top of the page for more information on each of the facilities, the conditions they treat, and the doctors on staff.

Just a hint: it does help if your Family Dr 'recommends' your going there even for a 2nd or 3rd opinion. Mine faxed a letter.
Expect a full day, the first time you walk thru the doors. Bring your entire list of meds, ailment(s), and ALL Drs you have seen in the last year even if you give them all the info over the phone
Best thing I've done in 14 years.
Butterfly (who sat and watched an ENTIRE 30 min TV show, How it's Made, without getting up ONCE!!!!!! last Wed night)
Good advice, Butterfly. That list of meds should also include names and dosage size and frequency for everything you take, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, vitamins, etc. Bring along your latest x-rays of your hip if you can.
Be prepared to sit around and wait; have something to read or some handwork with you. They schedule appointments for tests, etc. far enough apart so that you don't have to rush between them. That means wait time.
Let me know if you come to Rochester; perhaps we'll have time to meet up even if it is > Just a hint: it does help if your Family Dr 'recommends' your going there
quite frankly anywhere I can get a direct flight from Sea-Tac, you're right, I think the Mayo Clinic does have someone, I'm sure when I was searching for generic information one of the pages was from there, but I'd forgotten about it.
When I needed my hip replacement re-done, we searched on the internet for the best surgeon we could find. My surgeon is at a teaching/university hospital and he has amazing educational credentials at some of the biggest and most respected universities in the country. He specializes in and has done extensive research in hip revisions for problem hip replacements. I was very fortunate that I found the best- and 'only' a 4 hour drive from home. The search engine is your friend.... but don't forget that a long trip home after surgery can be really, really difficult. I know.
Part of the problem is, that there is what everyone says is a very good person locally, which means that it's going to be a long distance before you get the next very good person. But after seeing this very good person, whilst I can see that he may well be very good, he also doesn't have much knowledge or understanding or a particular condition that I suffer from, which means though in the abstract, he may be great at doing that surgery, he can give no information about how things may be afterwards and I have a horrible suspicion it could potentially make things worse, if it does, the only option left would be hip replacement
- which isn't a great outlook at any age, but I'm 27, I don't have arthritis, but if you start removing things from my hip - which is what he intends to do, you can't put them back. It's all very confusing.
Like DD said tonight: "Mom, I'm so glad you and Dad went there. They've made a huge difference." As an aside: Julia's the one that first told me about Mayo so many years ago when we had an ill friend being treated there. She's never said me wrong...and I truly would like to meet her one of these days.
HTH Butterfly (sometimes we just need an unsolicited input)
I found it hard to believe that they didn't do it here, so I googled "arthroscopic hip surgery mayo clinic" and came up with this: and a link on that page led me to .
Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with Mayo Clinic other than as a satisfied patient for many years.
That's why you need to see someone at a large clinic that does lots of similar procedures. Mayo has a reputation for treating conservatively but does have expertise in a lot of surgical-type procedures because they are so large and see so many patients.
Thanks for the kind words, Butterfly. I'm sure that I'm biased in favor of Mayo just because I've always been treated well there. Of course, I have lots of friends and acquaintances who work there; that's unavoidable when you have an organization that employs something like

unfortunately minimally invasive hip replacement is not at all the same as hip arthroscopy, so you'd have to google "hip arthroscopy" mayo clinic, which does come up with a link, but it's in the general health information section, rather than a specific procedure they perform. Going via the orthopedic surgery pages, again, no mention at all. Hard to believe, I know, one source claimed there was only 10 surgeons in the US that perform this surgery - which explains why they are hard to track down!
Well, that makes 2 of us now. I haven't heard negative things about their Drs. Yes, you're apt to run across 'grouchy' once in awhile (so far I haven't) but I have *NOT* found any with an ego bigger than the room they are in..and believe me there are a LOT of Drs that do, no matter which state you live in. ((Sent a lot of them to Miz Polly's Gators;) )) Mayo Drs told me upfront that they were going to do their best to find out the CAUSE of my problem(s) and then __we___ would work out what was best for me. No, it hasn't been an easy road but the improvement is sooooooooooooooo worth it and I still have a ways to go.
I wish you success in finding the right Dr(s) for what you need.
You could call them and ask too. If you still have no luck, you might look at places that specialize in sports medicine. It is my understanding that some of the best joint specialists are in that field.
The first link I gave you does say that Mayo does arthroscopy of most joints; I assume that would include the hip. I'm not a doctor (don't even play one on TV :) so I don't know (and don't really care) why you believe you need hip arthroscopy. I'm probably reading something into your messages that you don't intend, but it sounds to me like you have already determined the type of diagnostic procedure or treatment you want and are looking for someone to treat you that way. I guess I would be more inclined to find someone who has experience in treating whatever disorder/disease I have and then rely on them to recommend the best method of treatment.
Good luck in finding the treatment you need. If you (or anyone else reading this) ever come to Mayo in Rochester and have time for a get-together, let me know. I'll be glad to take you to the LQS or have a cup of coffee in the Mayo coffee shop or just sit with you for a while in a waiting room.
