OT Re Computer Problems

Computer is going through a moody phase which DS the computer psychiatrist is coming to sort out (I hope) on Saturday, so if I disappear for a while it has cracked up completely! At the moment it is feeling a little better, but yesterday went and hid completely! Who knows what tomorrow may hold!

Oh, Sally, I'm so sorry to hear you're having computer problems! Hmmm...have you asserted your dominance over it lately? Or is it trying to wrest control away from you? ;) I wish I could help!

We just need to remember that we are the "alpha" computer, and we must use a firm but loving hand.

Or a bigger hammer.

I've called all over the place, Sandy. :( No one in our area does DSL except the one I'm currently with -- one national one told me that it's because my ISP is a phone company and they won't share their lines with other potential DSL providers. My other options are to return to dial-up (and lose out on the video chats with DT) or go to a satellite connection (also losing out on the video chats because of a slower speed). Neither of those is very attractive, so I'm exploring getting my own domain name and finding a web hosting service.

Sandy,

Does anyone in your area offer wireless internet service? That's what I have - there are two or three (maybe more that I don't know about) wireless internet services in my area (Boise, Idaho). My service comes off a tower a few miles from my house and I have a receiver on my roof. It's extremely fast. Costs me $49/month which is both bandwidth and internet service. I can't read newsgroups through my provider, but I get it through news.individual.net for about $12/year.

I just searched on wireless internet Las Vegas and came up with a bunch of hits.

Thanks, Donna. I hadn't thought about wireless -- in fact, I'd never heard of it except in relation to whether I was operating wirelessly via my usual ISP!

I did a search for LV and came up with a bunch of hits, too. Unfortunately, most of them seem to be out of business (phone numbers disconnected, etc.), or they service businesses and price accordingly. Still, it was a good idea!

Do you have cable internet available?

Yes, Julia, but we don't have cable in our home. That means it would be prohibitively expensive to get cable internet. :S DH doesn't want to give up the satellite TV, and I can't blame him.
