OT: Sore Throat

I'm not sure what to do here. Late yesterday afternoon my throat started to hurt. Since I have major sinus issues during the winter I figured that, as usual, it was just irritation from post nasal drip. I don't think so any more. It really hurts me to swallow, which usually doesn't happen with the post nasal drip.

I don't have a fever. David had me look at my throat, but since I don't know what to look for I couldn't tell anything. It looked red. And like my throat. David looked and says its a little swollen and that my lymph nodes are also a little swollen.

Right now he has me gargling salt water. (Yuck! that stuff makes me gag).

Is there something else I should be doing? Would aspirin help with the pain, assuming I can swallow it?

David also says without a fever I should be eating. But it hurts so much to swallow! Is there something that will slip down and soothe my throat at the same time?

And of course, we're scheduled to have people over tonight. I really want to start feeling better soon.

Try hot lemonade or tea with honey. As hot as you can stand. Stay away from dairy. asprin or tylenol might numb the pain for a while - if you can swallow. Do they make those dissolving strips for pain relief? or just for sinuses... Hate to say it but your symptoms sound like when my kiddo had strep throat. Might need to get it checked. Somehow they escaped fever with that too.

Hope you feel better soon!

Aspirin will help, so will Chloraseptic spray. It tastes nasty, but it works. I keep it in the fridge so it's cold.

The sinus drainage could be making it sore, or you could have strep. I know I had a sore throat so bad one time, I had to stand on tiptoe to swallow! That's when I discovered the joy of Vicodin. It was in the cough medicine the doc gave me. She said she had seen kids with this that were drooling rather than swallowing. I can understand why.

I used to get sore throats all the time, not so much any more.

Do you still have your tonsils? That can cause a bad sore throat if you get tonsillitis. Sherbet (you can stir it around to make it softer) or a milk shake comes to mind for some calories and cold and soothing and you need lots of liquids right now. Non-fizzy (flat) 7-Up is an old stand-by. Aspirin will most likely help with the pain- if you can take it. It's know to cause stomach irritation on an empty stomach. It's safe to crush aspirin and hide in it a bit of food to make it easier to go down your poor sore throat. If you get white spots on your throat I know that's big trouble. It sounds like you need to see a doc- today if possible with the holiday tomorrow. Chances are not real good that you'll feel better tomorrow. You'll probably feel worse. Sorry for the lousy news.

Wishing I'm wrong and you pull right out of this-

Maureen, I'm so sorry you're not feeling well. I know that, when I'm having my annual bouts of sore throat/sinus infection, hot liquids seem to go down better than cold. Since I love hot tea anyway, that's my liquid of choice. I hope you don't have strep, as others are wondering, and that you're feeling better soon.

Hey, guess what? Apparently, there's no such thing as "tonsillitis" any more! Yeah, I know. I had it all my life. But now it's all "strep". I found this out when DD was little. The Dr laughed at me when I said she had tonsillitis.

At least, this is what I've been told.

Not according to Mayo Clinic: . Sore throats can have many causes . One of them is a strep infection (strep throat)

My two cents. Take some ibuprofen, brand name in Canada is Advil, Motrin etc.. It will help a lot more than Tylenol or actetephime. My spelling sucks. If you don't have the Advil take Asprin that would be my 2nd choice. This is presuming these medications are safe for you take.

The more you drink and keep swallowing the less it will be. Try ice cream, milk shakes anything cold. If that fails to help try something hot. The odd time hot does make it feel better. Have him check your throat again. If there is any white spots or you get a fever I would go get checked. Or any other symptoms for that matter. I never found gargling salt water helped me, but then that's me, not you. Also the drug store do sell a numbing spray and lozenges that will help, just ask the pharmacists. The Brand in Canada is usually Cloreseptic.

The old wives tale about "feed a cold, starve a fever is true. So listen to your hubby. Dr> I'm not sure what to do here. Late yesterday afternoon my throat started to

Anything like tonsillitis or strep is all the same thing. It's an infection of the tonsillitis, or if your without the sinuses, and throat area. It can even infect saliva glands, I've had that one and spent 4 months in hospital. Either way all of these things you need an anitiboitc. Now way around it, get to the dr. The sooner the better. If it's this it will only get worse.

Strep throat and tosillitis are two different things. you can have streptococcus in your tonsils, but not tonsillitis in your throat....anyway...my 2 cents...

Lots of warm fluids, and if you can stand it, some Gatoraid for the electrolytes so you dont get dehydrated...As for any pills..ask the doctor. Sounds like you need an antibiotic. Get there quick, pneumonia is going around, so is strep.

We've had alot of strep in the office lately (i work for a doctor)....

I feel for you, honey...get better soon.

Don't just swallow it, gargle with it first. Gargling with soluble aspirin was something a doctor suggested to me when I had a bad strep throat many years ago and I've never found anything else as rapidly effective. (If you do have a strep infection you'll need antibiotics as well, though).

Well, I guess that dates me! LOL Still feel badly for Maureen no matter what they call it. (I quit getting 'tonsillitis after I had a tonsillectomy at age 27- never got it again and it's now about 31 year later!)

You have tons of good advice here! I've always gargled with hot salt water when I have a sore throat, and it works wonders for me. I wonder if you could dissolve aspirin and use the liquid for a gargle, it provides good pain relief even when applied topically.

As for eating/drinking, I would suggest room-temp 7-UP or similar lemon-lime soda, Some folks let it stand uncapped to decrease the carbonation. Jell-O is cool and easy to swallow with a sore throat, though I fear it has little or no nutritional value. For me Jell-O is a comfort food. Ditto chicken soup and/or broth. Chicken broth cab be taken hot, or cold; if it jells a bit, call it aspic. Chicken broth would also have a bit of nutritional value for you.

DH swears by the throat spray made by the Vicks people.

Strepsils are good too.

I always used to get a very painful throat at the beginning of a cold.

Get well soon

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I've been drinking gallons of stuff and though the throat hurts, swallowing is easier. Aspirin and such like dulls the pain for awhile too.

I'm pretty convinced, giving the way my nose is dripping this morning, that I've just got a really bad cold. I feel crudy, but not much to do with a cold except drink soup and other liquids and keep blowing my nose.

I still get it. I still have my tonsils. Every time they tried to take them out, I got it again. I don't get it nearly as often as I used to. My tonsils are like plums in the back of my throat.

They managed to yank my brother's. He still got sore throats.

You're about the same age as me. We're lucky they didn't try to irradiate our tonsils. They did that with a lot of kids in the late 50's/early 60's. Seemed to work, too! Shrunk those tonsils down to nothing.

Unfortunately a lot of them ended up with Thyroid Cancer as adults. Highly treatable, but still.

I had my tonsils yanked when I was about 7. It was a three day hospital stay back then. I gather that when they do it these days it is an outpatient pocedure. When I was about 15 I came down with mono and tonsilitis all at the same time. The doctor called all his nurses and the students he was mentoring into the exam room to look at the tonsilitis in my tonsil beds.

Poor DH wasn't near so lucky. His doctor tried to avoid taking his tonsils out, and he came down with tonsilitis year after year. Until finally when he was 17 he had it so bad that his tonsils burst. He has a tiny piece of a tonsil still in his throat.

Not one of our kids has had a single problem with their tonsils. Go figure.

Glad to hear you are at least keeping hydrated. Depending upon where you live, there should be an Urgent Care Center or Clinic open tomorrow, you should go (if your family Dr is off) and get an antibiotic at least.

I, too, had my tonsils out when i was 14, not fun. Back then i think i stayed 4 days in the hospital. Of course, i did give them a "hard time" when i choked on my own blood...yuk, couldnt breathe, the nurse thought i was joking...until i turned blue...

go to the doctor's....

keep us updated...

I ended up at the doctor's yesterday. The diagnosis was that I just have a cold. A bad one but a cold nonetheless. She gave me a prescription for Robutissin with Codeine to take at night. (And that stuff truly knocked me out last night!) And told me I should be feeling better in a couple of days. And gave me instructions to come back if I start to feel better and then suddenly get worse.

I'm coughing and sniffling terribly. I can't seem to get rid of the congestion and have no energy or appetite.

I hope the feeling better part starts soon. in the meantime, I'm stuck in bed alternately reading my library books (one left) and sleeping.
