OT - tornado survivors

What a mess we have around here. I had about 45 seconds warning yesterday thanks to GrammyKathy who told me on chat that I was under a tornado warning. I made it to cover just as the thing hit us with a wall of water and wind, immediately knocking out the power for the next 25 hours. We did not get a direct hit, the tornado passed 3 blocks south of us. We went out later and followed the path through town. It skimmed through about treetop level, tearing up trees, poles, lines, a very few houses and outbuildings. At the same time, another passed through 1/2 mile on south of that, causing greater damage. What a mess there is out there! I'm amazed at the crews getting us up and running already. In two different places the crews were out working and flood waters came up on them and they were stuck. But now our power is back on, the chain saws have been running, people seem to be settling down, and I'm back in my air conditioning able to breathe again. So of course now that we can relax a little - we are exhausted. 'Night all!

Oh my Karen. I am so happy all is well. We had ominous clouds through yesterday -- but no weather. Today it was in the 90's with high humidity and we were under a severe thunderstorm watch -- but nothing materialized fortunately.

It is scary how quickly tornado's can just drop out of the sky. Again -- prayers you are safe and that your town is back to normal quite quickly.

Oh Karen, I'm so glad it missed your home and that you and yours are all safe. It seems the nation is being hit by bad tornadoes in places where they never used to go.

When I was younger, March through July were officially "tornado season" in central Texas where I lived. Now, it seems like it's all year long and that the storms no longer pay attention to the boundaries of the old "tornado alley".

At any rate, I hope the storm clouds pass us all by safely and leave our stashes unscattered and our houses unscathed.

Popping in here to let everyone know that Mz Butterfly and DH are safe. They are near DesMoines tonight and heading in to Colorado tomorrow. They cleared out just before the storms hit.

Still holding everyone to be safe, these weather patterns are terrible.

Well - forecast for the next 10 days is: Rain, Storms, Wind. Wonder how many times we'll have to clean-up the front lawn? lol

Our tv news is still showing pictures of those storms and they make us want to take shelter and not come out. Thank you Karen for letting know that you are okay. Please do take care for the next assault coming in. I'm reminded of a hurricane in FL where people were killed days later by falling trees. Sometimes damage doesn't seem apparent right at first. We will be holding you close. Polly

Good Lord! I didn't even turn on the news yesterday, and missed this story completely. Stay safe, Karen. Sending warm thoughts and strength to all who are affected. All of Tornado Alley has been in my prayers this year again.

speaking of cleanup - I'm sure a tornado went over us without actually touching down. many of our hickory, oak, and sassafras trees were torn in half and the day after the storm a dead tree we had actually called the tree pros about taking down decided to give up and fall across the neighbor's driveway necessitating a lot of chainsawing and loading wood into the truck in the rain and mugginess. One family in the neighborhood had a tree fall into the roof and attic, while another had 2 trees fall ON the roof and one tree on their van. The entire valley south of our subdivision is underwater. DH and I spent

4 hours in the yard, mostly just the front, yesterday - he wielding the chainsaw and me raking and clearing the small stuff. whew. I've already arranged with 3 different kids to come and spend an hour helping me pick up the back. One scary thing is that a huge red oak that overhangs the garage has a vertical split in the trunk from the wind - it didn't break yet - but that's just a matter of time - so I'm off to call the tree pros!

WOW!! Do you have one of those storm alarms? My friend in Indiana has one and it has a test every Wednesday. If I am on the phone with her and it goes off it scares me so I can only imagine the real thing. I am glad you're safe. I will be visiting her the 18th to the 23rd and pray I don't hear it while visiting. Pami

Yes, our alarms went off, but the wind was blowing the sound away from me. We never heard them in our area.

Karen, we are also back together..no water damage. Heard the sirens loud and clear, since they are in my back yard, lol About broke Cassies leg getting her out from under the chair to head for cover:) The wind, thunder or whatever did shake stuff off the walls. DH delayed in MN for most of the day, but got home in time to finish cleaning up the yard. Enjoy the rest of your vacation. Lyn

speaking of cleanup - 15 man hours to clean up the front yard and driveway. 3 more spent today in backyard. An estimated 10 more hours to finish raking the back and stacking all the firewood. Then DH and son will be renting a logsplitter to deal with the very large oak pieces for woodpile. And in the meantime, there's a 100+ foot tall red oak that was damaged in the storm, with a visible vertical crack in the trunk, leaning over the garage and DH's classic '52 truck. Insurance won't pay for tree removal, but we're on the list anyway - pray the tree stands until the tree cutters can get here!!
