OT: When it rains.......

Hey there, I don't want to whine too much, but I'm in the middle of another infuriating mess. Bottom line is that we bought a new refrigerator, delivered around noon yesterday. And it doesn't get below 38 degrees on the refrigerator side. Often, it gets back to

44-48. That's Farenheit.

We paid cash. I have a receipt that says "satisfaction guaranteed." Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. All my frozen food thawed partially (or fully) and refroze. Sort of. My margarine melted in the container. Everything is ruined. I know a bit about food safety, and everything in the refrigerator and the freezer is probably full of ptomaine now.

I'm so angry. And, my Round Robin group is coming to my house at 6 tonight. Whimper.

And it's hot.

There, I've whined. Now I have to go figure out what to do beyond speaking very firmly to people on the phone.

Keep me in your thoughts and prayers. I think I really need all the prayers I can get.

Thanks for listening, Sunny

Oh no! I hope the dealer is honorable and will get it fixed- or replaced- and reimburse you the cost of the food. That really stinks!

just call them, say its not working properly, all your food is ruined and you've got friends arriving this evening and you want the fridge replaced with a new one before then. its likely it is the 'one in a million lemon' but its not your problem. you can not be expected to wait while they have it fixed, "refridgeration of food is essential"...just bring you a new fridge that works NOW.

i'd also ask them to compensate you for all the food lost, estimate that and tell them you'd like that 'cash' to arrive with the new fridge. good grief...so much for cash sales, eh, you'd expect better from anyone who retails appliances. if they get snarky with ya... ask if they'd prefer the outcome if lack of refridgeration leads to someone getting sick. also tell them you'll be sure to spread the word about their lack of customer service to all your family, friends, collegues at your work (they wont know if you work or not) and your husbands workplace too. take no prisoners!! jeanne below 38 degrees on the refrigerator side. Often, it gets back to

I always thought 40 degrees fahrenheit was appropriate on the fridge side.

0 degrees on the freezer side.

Contact your dealer... surely you have options.

Isn't there a three day law pertaining to purchases that you are not satisified with, the vendor has to take it back no questions asked and you get a replacement at same or lessor value or a full refund. The vendor will probably tell you the loss of your food is not their problem and you'd have to file a claim with homeowner insurance or renter's insurance.

And if you get no joy of the vendor, go to the manufacturer. I am so sure that Frigidare or whoever would be just *ecstatic* to hear that one of their appliances not only punked out upon delivery, but cost the customer serious money due to the malfunction, ran the risk of poisoning said consumer if they had been a tad stupid, AND then the nice customer who paid out the big bucks for one of their nice reputable appliances and was seriously disappointed and possibly poisoned got crap from the retailer. Oh yes, can't you see them just dancing with glee?

You may have to push, but somebody will fix this. Use the disappointed mom voice, not the angry voice. Use their first name if they give it, and just pretend you are taking them to task for flunking math after hiding their homework from you all year. Works a charm.

The Round Robin has gone home, and it was a very fruitful meeting. Right now I have a "loaner" refrigerator in my kitchen. A replacement of the one I bought will be delivered by Tuesday or so. The store gave us $250 to replace ruined food.

My understanding is that 40 F is the highest safe temperature with 38 preferred. The refrigerator continued to show 34 F on the front while inside the temp r anged from 40 up. Food spoils really fast. Once meat is thawed, it has to be cooked immediately or it's not safe. Unfortunately, we had about 28 pounds of various types of meat that all thawed in the night. And I made a really big mistake and pulled the dog food can out of the refrigerator and fed my guys breakfast. Within 20 minutes, both were vomiting horribly. All the way down the stairs, all over the basement floor. Neither one made it to the dogdoor, although they tried. Bless their little hearts. So that told me really fast that the food had gone bad in a big way. Long ago I had an experience with a can of Spaghettios, my dog and my then 4 year-old son. It ended with the boy spending 4 days in the hospital very sick and the dog nearly dying in the backyard because I was at the hospital with the boy and didn't realize how sick she was (they shared the can of Spaghettios). So I'm very, very sensitive to food safety issues.

Anyway, it's nearly over. I'm really tired, but it ended satisfactorily for all, including the store manager who came out to help deliver the loaner. I gave her some information and encouraged her to give a try at doing something she's always wanted to do and that I know something about. She was thrilled and left very, very happy.

And in another post I'll tell all about what our Round Robin has been doing.
