OT: Windows Vista users?

I need help. I've got two computers networked wirelessly through Netgear network adapters and an AT&T 2wire gateway. The computer with Windows XP operates flawlessly. The one with Windows Vista is a PITA. Vista does not "recognize" Netgear. To get it to run the Netgear program, I must right click on the Netgear icon, click Run as Administrator, and Allow Vista to run the program. It all works well for about 24 hours, then I must do this again. Is there any way to tell Vista to ALWAYS accept the Netgear program? Once Vista runs Netgear, it works great, so there doesn't appear to be any conflicts--except for these extra safeguards.

Any help would be much appreciated.

sorry Michelle Can't help with your problem, but I can commiserate with you. I'm running vista and DH is running XP We ditched NetGear when I got my new laptop and are now running thru a Belkin router. I still have far more disconnects than DH does. We also have a Buffalo Link Station back-up drive that we bought to do automatic back-ups to and to store things like photos. We have not been able to get my laptop to recognize this drive. Which really sucks cause all our business books for the last few years are on my laptop and all of our family pics are on the backup drive. I do have backup disks but we have already learned that these are not always reliable either.

DH is my computer geek and given time I'm sure he could figure something out, but we have been way too busy lately for him to spend time on this quirk. Everytime I have an issue with something he makes derogatory remarks about Vista! LOL

Oh well, I better get back to doing books

Hi Marilyn,

Well I appreciate the commiseration! As time goes on, we've discovered more Vista quirks. Ahem! I've always loved Windows in all its evolutions, but Vista isn't one of them. Very disappointing.

Good luck with your back up drive!

can't help you either, but to sympathize. I woke up this morning right as a dream was ending that had a banner sized graphic entry in my "my computer" file that was a smiling virus, and as the alarm went off, all I could see as the dream faded was a huge, crocodile shaped, set of smiling teeth, mocking me. sigh. I sure wish this pc of mine would die!

If you right click on the shortcut, and click on 'advanced' you should be able to set 'run as administrator' under advanced properties. Then, the program will always run as administrator whenever you start up from the shortcut.

I also hate vista, but have had no problems on my laptop with netgear. Perhaps it is because I installed the netgear router FROM the vista computer? If you still have the installation disk, you might try un-installing the router and following the installation instructions you got when you bought it, using the vista computer to install from.

I've never used it and hope not to. (I have some reservations from what I've heard of Windows 7 as well - no Classic mode!)

The only thing I can suggest is to see if there are updated drivers available:

They also appear to have a support "knowledgebase" and a forum where you might very well find a solution.

Thanks for the help L. I'm going to look at the "run as administrator" advanced properties.

Unfortunately, I can't install the router on the Vista computer. The new Vista computer belongs to my 86 yo grandpa who lives in a small apartment behind our house. The router needs updating once in awhile and it would freak him out to have to deal with it.

I have officially joined the "I Hate Vista" non-fan club. Vista went insane and I lost just about everything and my computer was in-operable for 5 days. Then *I* almost lost it from withdrawal from my Solitaire games, rctq and emails. Now it's all better- kinda/almost- but let me tell ya... those folks who warn you to do regular back-ups really *do* know what they are talking about!

news.individual.net downloaded 8858 messages on rctq, so I'm going to have to mark all of them as read and start fresh.

And a big thank-you to the folks who noticed I was missing and emailed to ask if everything was okay with The HairyButt Gang and me. That was so sweet of you and I appreciate it! Other than the puter troubles we are just hunky-dorey. ;-)
