Re: OT 3am stargazing

Good time to look for the Perseids shower - meteors. Around now for about 3 days.

Faye - I can relate. One night during our recent backpacking trip, I had to go out and, ya know... Anyway - discovered a sky full of stars that I'd never seen before - there's something both inspiring and intimidating about the stars, isn't there?

Just bought a book for my boys called 'No Matter What' all about how love lasts forever. To discuss love after losing someone they point out the stars and how they died long ago but were still shining brightly for us to see. Its a truly beautiful childrens book Curly in Oz

I read a story once - Isaac Asmov, I think - called "Nightfall" (spoiler warning) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

. .

It was about a planet with multiple suns, so there was always a certain amount of light in the sky. There were always some loonie-toon types running around talking about faraway suns that would appear as pinpricks of light in the sky if the sky had been dark enough, but nobody believed them, until one day ALL the suns set at the same time..... . . . .

...the result was the end of civilization and the few people who remained (the blind, the insane, the very young, those few who had slept through nightfall) had to rebuild from scratch.

You and I have the same ideas, Curly. DH and I tell the girls that when someone they love dies (human or animal), they become stars in the sky, looking down and protecting those left behind. Kinda nicer than the real option, hey?

I think I finally saw Mars this morning at 5. Is it to the right of and below the moon? Couldn't find my binoculars to get a closer look.

It is bright orange and it doesn't twinkle like the other stars. Quite large and relatively close to the moon. Bigger than the other stars.

I finally got to see it last night around midnight! It has been so rainy here that it was impossible all last week!
