Microfiber sheets

Thank goodness I am not the only one. I also avoid "sugar free" like the plague - though that is getting harder to do in the local supermarket, especially when buying squash (concentrated fruit drink for diluting).

here's a free pair of chooks... 5 years & 20 someodd chickens later... :)

well, we like the Silkies, but the bantam cochins were mean & i gave them away (why is it every time i say i'm going to make stew of a bird someone offers to take it instead?). Boo has scars from the bantam cochin, one on his upper lip & one on an eye... 5 year olds are in range for a bantam jump attack to the face. the only problems with the Silkies is Broody goes broody every summer & both she & Bek lay small eggs... lots of small eggs however. they are very consistant producers with almost no 'winter break'... and they're *really cute*. ok, get Silkies. they come in lots of pretty colors, but both mine are black (from a cream hen & an apricot rooster) lee

i love pickled peaches! would you share your recipe?

pickles are back on my canning list, especially sweet pickles & relish, because all the commercial ones have HFCS. the organic ones i've seen around here have horrible texture & the relish is way too liquidy... lee

When I was a little girl we lived in a county that prided itself on the peaches grown there, and my dad made the best peach pickles. The only brand I ever see in stores now isn't worth buying, but I make this easy version at holidays, and they're quite good:

nope, no sugar free here either. if anything is *worse* for kids than HFCS, it's artificial sweeteners (plus i'm a 'supertaster', one of those people who gets the vile aftertaste even from the fake sugars that "have no aftertaste"). my poor child came up to me in the grocery store with some "new, improved no sugar" thing aimed at kids. i had him read the ingredients, & then explained it used artificial sweeteners, followed by "now go find something with *sugar* in the ingredients"... which got me some really strange looks :) today's shopping list include ingredients for chocolate wafer cookies. the kid loves ice cream sandwiches, but there are

*none* without HFCS. the only 'organic' ones i can find aren't ice cream, but soy. *i* won't eat soy because i just had a hormone reactive breast cancer removed. lee

Well (see above) I was talking specifically about jams, conserves, chutneys and preserves. We don't eat much in the way of pickled items, though we also enjoy a jar of Claussen now and then. Just too much vinegar.

You caused me to run to the fridge and check the Claussen. Ack! HFCS. It's incredible. Another item bites the dust in our household. I guess I'll make some refrigerator B&B pickles this year. I once made an assessment of the regular cookie aisle at the grocery. Every single brand but one had either transfat or HFCS. And my daughter hated that brand. So now I get her cookies from the health food aisle.

While my family members are infrequent consumers of pickled items (and oh I have tried so many things), they really love the zucchini relish I made (Food Lover's Guide to Canning). There's always way too many zucchinis so it works out well. :) Zucchini B&B pickles aren't bad either but I prefer cucumber for the few times I crave pickles.

Our Whole Foods is 26 miles so we don't go there very often. I only go, usually when I have to drive into town for something else.

Good for you! Your family's long-term health will surely benefit.

Thanks ever so much for the recommendations! I have sent this on to my DH's email. I think we need to get a dog first (to help keep predators away). Just haven't had the heart since our Newfie died... but it's time.

Soy is overdone, too, I think. The whole idea is to eat a diverse diet, not everything made of soy (or corn or wheat, etc). My son gets aggravated because I won't eat tofu. I simply don't like it, though I've tried it many different ways, and I don't see any particular health benefit either.

I didn't know that made one a supertaster!

In that case I have a 'super' tag!

It's been a long time coming :-)

I won't eat it, not because of the bc but because I've never tasted anything containing soya which was good enough to eat or drink.

That could be because I'm a SUPERTASTER :-)

Love it!

I've never even heard of pickles peaches but this sounds good.

How long do they keep?

Well, you hve to be careful of any breed, some are known to be less friendly than others. Never had a cochin so wouldn't know.

The smaller eggs are good, I think. Our appetites have shrunk and one bantie egg is perfect. When we were younger two would have been perfect :-)

One of our first hens was part silkie - five toes and very fluffy although not like a true silkie. Isn't it funny though how you get completely different colours from maternal and paternal sides though! Our youngest is a Croad Langshan, gloriously shiny blue/green/black - from white and blue parentage! Our others are Wyandottes.

I can't eat soy because I'm allergic to it. That surprises some people, but it actually a very common food allergy. There are so many things that have soy protein added that I also have to check constantly. I have artificial sweeteners. They taste awful and I don't think they are very good for your brain, certainly not your soul. If I want something sweet, it's the sugar I want and it's the sugar I plan to eat. Juno

Har har. Heaven forbid! During my pregnancies, I craved radishes and pineapple. Once I bought a big, beautiful ripe pineapple, brought it home and ate the entire thing in one sitting all by myself. It made me so sick, I never ate pineapple for the next ten years or so. And you?

i went to Concord today (NH, not MA) & the Shaw's had Cabot Greek style yogurt in plain quarts. we'll see if it's good or not.

Tom found some barbecue sauce in the store today that had big yellow letters proclaiming "NO HFCS!!!" so i think maybe enough people are starting to actually look at their food. lee

There's none in my Claussen's pickles, but they're Kosher Dill. I buy those and the garlic dill only. Nobody here eats sweet pickles.
