[OT] It's "Beverly"!

Today's rant:

This perfectly reflects my views about gratuitous nicknaming:

(February 10) I know Catherine prefers "Kate" so that is what I call her. My Dad was Robert but he prefered "Bob", and only used "Robert" for legal documents.

But, if Pogonip signs herself "Joanne" is she called "Jo"? Sharon "Shar"? Juno "Ju"? Emily "Em"? Ursula "Urs"? Terry "Ter"? Is Richard automatically called "Dick" or "Rick"? If a man is named William, does everyone think he prefers "Bill" even though he always introduces himself as "William"? Heaven only knows what these friendly people call "Wayne"! "Way"??? ;-}

I don't understand why so many people, seeing me sign as "Beverly", automatically assume I am "Bev".

Ok, back to sewing now... ;-)

I know I have been guilty of using nicknames at times and try not to. It drives me crazy when it's done to me. I understand how you feel, Beverly. What has made me even crazier is when I introduce my myself to some one and they call me June. I correct them and they still call me June. At that point I become rather testy and rude and tell people that I do know my own name and to use that name, not the one that person thinks they should call me. Juno

Agreed, I am Lizzy Taylor (as opposed to Elizabeth Taylor or Liz Taylor). It cuts down the comments on husbands and fortunes. My in-laws insist on calling me Liz, but I have reached the stage of simply gritting my teeth over that, somehow it is different when it is *my* Mum doing it. The other thing that drives me up the wall is when I carefully spell out my email address and it still arrives as lizzie@......

There's history behind me being Kate. Blame Dad...

He wanted to call me Catherine after his Auntie Kate, who died before I was born. He'd been very fond of her. When he saw the scrawny wee scrap I was when I was born, he declared that I was far too undignified to be a Catherine, so I was Katie as a child. I kinda grew into Kate later. Now I only answer to Cathering in hospital. If I'm staying rather than just visiting for an appointment I get it changed or I forget they are talking to me!

I can understand that. Juno somehow rises above the herd. June is a pleasing enough name, but not yours. :)

Oh, I think we all know you are Beverley. Wouldn't *dream* of calling you Bev, well not unless I was feeling mischeivous (and there's a mighty lot of ocean between us)! :-)

My mother was Elsie, always 'Mum', unless again in a mischeivous mood in later years, when it would be 'Else', which I knew she hated. And yet my son has always been Julian to his son.

You do??? Really, I am "Beverley"???

You Brits call your parents by their given name? How quaint. ;->

I'm glad you understand.

There are just a very few people who get away with calling me "Bev". I was known as Bev in grade school for some reason, and my much loved younger brother still calls me that. He's too old now (65) for me to break his habit. ;->

I can readily understand how you would want to avoid the mix-up. ;-)

I was fortunate in having a DMIL who always called my by my correct name. Her name was "Kathryne", she preferred "Kay" (later my older DD's middle name) and one friend from school days always called her "Kitty". I don't know the story behind that, but she didn't seem to mind.

That's a nice family history, and I think you must be happy with 'Kate".

Then you have to consider the people who legally change their names. I was "Lara" (lahrah) until I was 18 and legally changed my name to "Larisa" (lahrihsuh). Well, now that I am 37, I have people that call me: Lara (lahrah) Laura (lorah) Larisa (lahrihsuh) Risa (reesuh) Mom Momma Larisa-Rose (what my name was legally changed to, but when I got married, I dropped the hyphenated first name, taking Rose as a middle name)

I just learned to answer to them all....those that knew me before the name change are the ones that call me Lara, those that don't know me at all call me Laura, those I've met since I changed my name call me Larisa, hubby calls me Risa, DS calls me Mom, DD calls me Momma, and idiots call me Larisa-Rose.....:-)....well, idiots meaning telemarketers, political compaigners, total strangers....oh, well, and my former college professors since that *was* legally my name at the time.

Esteemed Beverly,

You may call me Joanne, Pogonip, or Jo. For reasons I will not address here, you may also call me Kelley or Mac. Please do not call me Joan.

I will continue to address you as Beverly, or as Your Highness.

Sincerely,

Jo

My dad was always Jim. My cousin has always been Jimmie. My son has always been James.

Sometimes. James has been known to yell ALAN! when nothing else would get his attention!

I always introduce my mum by her given name.

LOL!

I always introduced my mother to others as "my Mother, Mary Brown" but had I been reckless enough to address her directly as "Mary" I probably would not be alive to type this. She insisted that we call a neighbor lady "Mrs. T____t" in spite of the fact that the lady urged all us kids to call her "Ruth". We didn't dare....

I legally changed my last name from "Brown" to "Ickes" 49 years ago. Made it very easy to tell when telemarketers used to call, no one ever knows how to pronounce "Ickes" as we do in the western U.S. " ICK-ess" It's amazing how many people throw an "L" in there.

Well, now that you bring it up, I've also been called Mom, MOM!!!, Mommy, Sweetheart, Darling, and "*$&^%#*^". :-)

For some years now, I have thought my name was "What?" because that's how my husband has addressed me since his hearing started going.
