Now we can hear about what has happened in other countries and continents via the internet and the radio before more local stories have been printed on the pages of the daily newspaper. In some ways the constant undercurrent of bad news reduces its effect - it can all too easily become a case of "not again", rather than "How on earth could they do THAT!" Unfortunately it also means that you are more likely to hear bad news about far off places and end up with a very skewed view of them.

I agree. This stuff isn't new. The only difference is news spreds more quickly now, especially given the internet. When these things happened 100 years ago only a handful of people would know about it.
Yes, as it's the bad news that the media digs into.....so we hear more of it. Not to mention they seem to really go out of their way to spread the doom and gloom.....

While there is no excuse whatsoever for beating a child, it is quite obvious this man had some sort of mental illness. All to often these people slip through the cracks because people are afraid or simply choose to ignore them. I am sure there was behavior previous to this, not as extreme, that if someone just noticed and took the time to help the man perhaps this tragedy could have been avoided.
I live one county north of this one, and knowing the area, I would guess meth was involved..... Karen
