OT Update on Hurricane Irene

Our Direct TV has 3 channels showing "live" pictures of the storm. For those of you who don't, the winds are 85 mph. Three dead in NC, and within this past hour a tree fell on the upper bedroom of a townhouse apt. and killed a child. The stations are urging that people get on the West side of their home to maybe prevent the wind from blowing another tree down and injuring someone else. There are power outages out in the storm area. Transportation has already shut down in New York City. If I can, I will try to answer questions you might have if you don't have access to this news.. We have DISH and like you, Barbara, we have access to several stations delivering news 24/7, especially about the hurricane.

With friends and relatives all along the East Coast and inland from Charleston, SC, Baltimore & DC, on through New Jersey and CT, and past Juno's home, we're watching and praying for everyone. So far, the ones we've heard from, are all safe, but there is another day or two before it moves out to sea completely.

According to the TV, there are many thousands who do not have electricity and only have battery radio. Many don't even have that access to news and depend on relatives and friends relaying the news by phone. I'll be glad to help however I can. Barbara in SC

Yes, we are all concerned and praying for our friends in the path of this hericane and hope they are safe. We all have friends, and relatives of friends in the Baltimore area and eastward on the islands, and in the northern states. Barbara

I responded to W. Boyce's comments and his response is below my paragraph.

Well, just because you call this drivel certainly doesn't make it so does it. Folks are just keeping people up on what's happening with a very serious situation and you say "duh a tree fell". Have a little compassion for your fellow mankind. If you don't want to hear this "drivel" don't read the damn thread. I haven't come across so many caring people in my life as this newsgroup seems to have and you just seem like a whining little "me.me.me" creature who can't say anything remotely caring! Get a life or go somewhere else to whine about it.

This is his "insightful" response to me. I have no desire to read any more of his posts -- he's in my kill-file. He obviously thinks I'm the other Bobbie!!

You place many supposed motivations behind my post: lack of concern for mankind, total self-centeredness, lack of having a life-purpose, whining, etc.

In turn, I have some possibilities for you: You could be a touchy-feely poser cultivating your image by commenting on everyone's misfortune and offering prayers all around while actually spending little or no time on your knees in prayer.

You could be a Katie Couric wanna-be, puffing up your own sense of worth and importance because you're geographically located in proximity to a national event and capitalize on it not only being a source of news but a helper of mankind as well. Never mind you can't get anything but news on the storm, never mind they're in the middle of the storm and you're miles away, never mind you can get this news on your cellphone, etc.

What, exactly is this "help" you're offering me to find out about my relatives in the Outer Banks when I'm in Kansas that I can't do myself in this electronic age? Phone communication through you?? How would you do that, exactly, something that I couldn't do myself? You didn't post your phone number, I noticed, or set up an 800 number. I have far greater motivation to track down my loved ones on the coast (and they me, to say they're "ok") than through a third party "do gooder" building that image for her buddies online. But that's not you, is it?

I guess the proof is in the pudding: if people have been actually helped by the individual effort offered by your post to be "communication central", I commend you for it. I've been wrong before and apologize. Bill B

Thank you Bobbie! I read the response from W Boyce. I doubt this person actually read my post because I only offered to relay on the computer, the news I was seeing on the TV. And yes, I actually did relay some of the TV news to one person, and received a reply to a question I had concerning the wind and water around Baltimore, where I have friends, and also about damage in an area of NC.. Bobbie: I honestly shouldn't have sent his response to the group I should have kept it private--I've already sent him my apologies for doing so. I was just angry at his rsponse and typed "off the cuff".

Killfile and forget him. As far as I can tell, he/it never pops up here except to denigrate the regulars for what he thinks is off topic. I do not recall a single thread in which he contributed usable sewing information. YMMV

Very true. I'm just thankful the only interactions I have with W. Boyce are in a forum where I can killfile every "contribution" that person makes.

Well, my goodness. Where did that Jerk come from? As a matter of fact, after Katrina I had a neighbor whose computer contacts were up and running somewhat. She managed to email an in-law in Atlanta so he could let our family know that we were okay. The phones were out, the cable was out, the towers were down. There wasn't a road to us that wasn't under water or a bridge safe. Barbara was very kind to offer to help any way she could. Maybe there's a 12-step program for W. Boyce. Polly

He's been around for awhile. Most of us have put him in the kill file. As far as I know I was his first object of derision. He is nasty beyond words, considers himself the police of usenet and always defends himself with self righteous drivel. Just put him in a kill file. He pops-up every now and then, and is best ignored. Juno

He's wonderfully funny. He or one of his clones tend to show up at things like city council meetings, and other public events, to show everyone how superior he and his judgement are. A total hoot.

"Polly Esther"

I have friends with no computer who often let the cell battery run down, and the house phone is sometimes left off the hook and I drive over to check on them during thunderstorms. Another friend, because of a speech problem from a stroke, does not get out to socialize at all unless I say that I need the company to go to a resturant and I do the ordering. We just never know...... Barbara

Ick has a short memory, but true, I don't post often.

But unlike her and the resident klatsch, I'm not addicted to this NG and/or feel compelled to chime in on EVERYONE'S post whether or not I have something useful to add,IMHO,or to defend the sacred honor of the annointed ones herein. JPBill

Nothing about teeth is funny. Or fun. Or mildly pleasant. Until you get rid of the damned things and replace them with something that works.

I wholeheartedly agree. I have invested the cost of a small house in dental implants.
