Home again.

Also commonly referred to as tinned meat and canned meat -- all three are used, some more commonly used in different parts of the States. As for Spam -- don't knock it -- it's a staple of the diet in Hawaii! This is where the Spam cookoff is held each year. I HATE fried Spam -- my Dad used to make it every Sunday that he cooked breakfast for the family after church. It's not bad when mixed with pork & beans, onions, brown sugar, etc. and I also make a truly great Spam and macaroni salad that I usually take to potlucks during the warm months. Of course, I don't actually *tell* anyone that the meat is Spam -- LOLOL! I just say it is tinned meat and let it go at that. If someone gets really insistent, I say it is a type of tinned ham product -- that usually takes care of the more curious. DD (remember, she's the Chef) even likes the Span & macaroni salad and she's like me -- doesn't have much use for the stuff. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

This time I'll spell your name correctly, sorry about that. I know it's Joanne with an "e." I like those garlicky half sour pickles. Shades of my days as a NYC girl. Make that a big fat juicy one, not some skimpy wimpy slice. Juno

AHEM!!! Recipe please! Remember, I live in hurricane territory and I ALWAYS have a can of corned beef and a can of Spam on the emergency shelf, plus I pride myself on being able to serve my family tasty, healthful meals for at least a week without benefit of electricity.

I learned a long time ago not to get too picky about the spelling of my name - there are so many possible variations of my first and last name that it just takes too long, and I knew who you were talking to anyway!

Yes! Big, fat, garlicy, crisp dill pickles that haven't been cooked, but got pickled in a proper crock. They go *crunch* when you bite them. NYC does have a handle on pickles and how to make a sandwich.

Thank you! We're ok up here in Reno, but the Weather Service has broadcast a Dense Smoke Advisory for south of here, from Tahoe east to Dayton and Silver Springs. I can smell woodsmoke right now, but there's no thick smoke outside. People to the south are warned to stay indoors because of poor air quality from the smoke, and lack of visibility.

We have had very little rain this year (3" since last July 1) and I expect we'll have a bad fire season this year. Could be worse - if we'd had spring rains, there could be lots more to burn.

There have been quite a few smaller fires already this year. This one is not small, though, apparently. Over 500 acres and 52 houses have burned so far. They're describing the houses as "exploding" in flames. Another 250 homes have been evacuated. No matter how pretty it is, it is not wise to have trees close to your house.

You can buy potted meat in New Orleans. That's where I grew up and we had it a lot.

One reason why I won't live in the hinterlands. I'm in the middle of the city, and concrete doesn't burn real well.

OK, they're a sort of British cousin. Or, as was said brilliantly in another ng about scones & American biscuits, "the mapping is not one-to-one."

Certainly, provided it is served with green salad or crudites on the side and followed by fresh fruit, all of which I stock up on when power outages are predicted.

Haven't you ever heard of pasta salad? This would appear to be another variant.

Yes, I just never thought of it as healthful. ;) Sorry to tease!

Well, a balanced diet requires a certain number of carbohydrates and fats, as well as fiber and vitamins.

And don't forget, we also ingest an unspecified number of insects every day.
