Off Topic (as usual) washers, refrigerators, and birds... oh my! ;o)

Carey, Lee and anyone else who I was talking with about the washing machine...

I wanted to let you know that Matthew pulled the machine out from the wall on Saturday and got back there looking around. He took the hose off the faucet coming from the wall and looked inside... couldn't see the screen. Then he took the hose off the back of the machine... still no screen... in the hose. That was when we spotted the small contraption that holds the hose to the machine, and lo & behold there was the screen. However, a problem arose when he tried every tool that he could possibly try and couldn't remove that thing from the machine, so he couldn't get it out to check if the screen was plugged up or not. *sigh* We'll just have to continue on the way we are for a while (Matthew has told me not to lug hot water to the washer though... he'll do it when he's home) until we can call a repairman... or buy a new machine.

Hi Gemini!

Have a look here, hopefully it will help:

had a similar problem with a dishwasher once.

I know that problem as well :-( You can try to see if the little hole conveying the condense water to a collector is filled with "rubbish" and clean it. Otherwise the termostate is likely gone and you have to replace it with a new one. In this case you can feel that the stuff in the fridge is not cold as it should be.

Maybe the dove is trying to help, who knows :-))))

at the part about clearing a clogged defrost drain. Normally, thewater evaporates under the refrigerator, but if it doesn't get there, itpools under the crisper drawers. If you take them out, you'll probably seethe defrost drain quite clearly. I'll bet that dove is trying to bring a peaceful aura to your home, so calmly look at the how-to's, and just take a look at the equipment(washer or refrigerator). Someone else put them together, so it can't really be all that hard, at least for the minor stuff. Just a bit of patience. HTH, Carey in MA

We have lots and lots of mourning doves in our yard and at our feeders. They basically scavenge and catch what the woodpeckers knock out of the feeders. We do have one or two brave ones who fly up to the feeders!

I love their cooing!

Gem, Aren't machines irritating? And they all choose to break down at the same time! I was just wondering if stores by you have lay-away plans. This would allow you to find something on sale, pay a small amount, and have them hold it until you can pay it off. Here they do this, and there is no extra charge for it. It has the advantage of giving you a light to see at the end of the tunnel.

Poor little dove and her egg! I hope her new nest is safer.

Thank you, Carey... I hadn't noticed that link about the refrigerator. Something to check on anyway. We actually had both crisper drawers out so that I could soak up the flood of water on the floor of the fridge, but when Matthew got down on his knees and looked inside he couldn't see where the water was coming from... no sign of a drain hole. Very frustrating to not be able to see where it's coming from.

What a sweet thought about the dove bringing a peaceful aura to our home. She was outside the window (well, above it in her new nest actually) this afternoon singing. My mom used to say they where crying for rain... we got a light sprinkle, nothing drastic.

No kidding they're irritating! I actually don't know of any local stores that sell appliances... I think we'd have to get them from the city (Zellers, Sears, etc) and I don't have an account at either place so I don't know how long they'd hold something on lay-away.

Besides right at this exact moment we don't have any spare cash to make a downpayment on anything. With Matthew taking out that loan last month, his first payment on that is the 15th of the month and we just paid the mortgage... the rest goes on gas for the van. No worries about food as I stocked up on meat and froze it, and also stocked up on canned vegetables too. I put a small amount of mad-money away in a hiding place (out of sight, out of mind) in case we run short during the month and absolutely need it. I've also taken to throwing all loonies & toonies ($1. & $2. coins to non-Canadians) that I get in change when I buy bread and/or milk into a jar... and any quarters go into another smaller jar. This way when we

*need* to use the laundromat, or just need a couple of dollars for something small, it's handy.

I'm actually a little more concerned about the odd sounds (and feelings) the van is making in the last couple of days. All the mechanics were gone when I got to the garage this afternoon, but the guy in the office said for me to bring it there tomorrow morning after bringing Matthew to work and he will send one of the mechanics out to go for a drive with me and listen for themselves. Meanwhile they are booked solid for the next three days, so I likely won't be able to have them *do* anything to it for a few days. :o/

I know, I felt so sorry for her too. Of course I've always felt a little sorry for mourning doves... they are a little "duh" compared to other birds... or maybe just very trusting.

Gem, welcome back! Instead of hauling water to the machine, just leave the hose disconnected from the back of the washer. When you need to fill the tub, put the end of the hose in there and turn on the faucet. Save your back, Girl!

Hi Carol, good to see you again! :o) If I could do that I'd be very happy.... unfortunately the sink is in the kitchen and the washer is in the laundryroom. Even if they were in the same room though... the faucet on the kitchen sink won't allow anything to be hooked up to it (not the right shape). I know because I can't hook the dishwasher to it either. :o/ We'll have to get that changed one of these days too.

Thank you for the thoughts though! :o)

Uh-oh! THe van noises don't sound good! Keep your fingers crossed! I do the same thing with loose change. That really comes in handy for me at times. Good luck with the machines.

Gemini, I think that Carol meant to leave the hose attached to the wall where the water comes into the laundry area, but to use the end that usually attaches to the back of the washing machine as if it were a separate hose and send the water into the machine via the lid. (Now, have I just confused that any further?)

Gem, I think Carol means to disconnect the hose from the back of your machine, leaving it connected to the tap behind the machine. Then just put the end in the machine and turn on the tap behind it. Assuming that you can reach the tap.

Yeah, and of course this morning all the way to the city and back the stupid van didn't act up (not that I minded other than the fact that it would make me look like a ditz)... much like when you have a toothache but it disappears when you go to the dentist. Anyway, once back in town I drove around a little, turning corners this way and that and making frequent stops. It worked... the sounds came back... so I went to the garage right away and grabbed a mechanic to come for a drive to hear it. It was a newer mechanic (to this garage... he had worked in the city previous to getting the job here in my town) so he actually listened to what I had to say about the van and the way it acts at different times. He said he was pretty sure of what it was (damned if I can remember now... I'm so mechanical) and said that it could take anywhere from 2 hours onward to fix it depending on what else he may find (and if all the parts are available at the time of the appointment... next Monday), but for now it is perfectly safe for me to drive... even out of town. :o) So just in case it will be an overnight stay for the van, Matthew will have to stay at his friend's place in the city next Monday night so he can take the bus to work in the morning.

Thank you!

Oh duh!! LOL Can we all say DITZY BLONDE?!? Of course that's what she meant. HAHAHA Man, I'm really out there, huh?

Gemini

PS. This may sound really stupid (big surprise considering where I just went with the suggestion from Carol), but without the filter, won't the water coming from the pipe be rusty?

What a nice idea, Mirjam! :o)

Aha! There is the reason I goofed up (Hey, I really do need a reason sometimes! LOL)... because we definitely wouldn 't be able to reach the tap behind the machine to turn it on to do the wash. The space in the laundryroom just nicely fits the washer and dryer (burned out motor in that

*sigh*) and the taps are directly behind the washer and can only be reached by pulling the washer all the way out for Matthew to climb in back there. See... that's why my mind went to the hose and the *kitchen* tap! ;o)

The question is not stupid at all. Checking the water before you fill the tub would be one way to make sure there isn't a lot of rust or other stuff in the water, but does your kitchen faucet have a filter on it? If not, I would think it would be the same water in the laundry tap as the kitchen tap, unless there is a problem with the pipe to the laundry tap. I guess I would run some into a bucket or bowl and see what it looks like. Or running the water through some sort of small-screened strainer into the washer tub.
