OT: Question for those in or around London

Good Day everyone,

I need some help from someone who might know: if a couple were going to get married in London, where might they register for wedding gifts? Here in the U.S., I can go to the website of any major dept. store and with the name of the bride and/or groom, I can pull up their gift list. Is there any major stores in the U.K. where couples do this and I could find it online?

Thanx, /J

Try Selfridges, Harrods (for the seriously posh!) John Lewis, House of Fraser, even good old Marks & Spencer. Not sure about finding them online though, but it might be worth a try. You might also need to have an idea of which branch they might be using. Whereabouts do they live? That might be a clue HTH Love & higs Christine

Thank you, Christine! I have another question: We have actually been invited to attend this wedding (wasn't it nice of the bride and groom to plan it for a long American holiday weekend? ;-) ). My husband and I have never been to London and have no idea where to stay. I can find a lot of deals for air + hotel online, but I don't know which is a reasonable hotel near all the sites of London for a quick weekend excursion (Friday to Monday). We don't need fancy...we need a clean bed and place to shower.

Any advice? Should I look in central London or any particular area?

Thanks, Jenn

Where's the wedding Jenn? That might make a difference. Did you find the weeding gift list BTW?

Sorry to follow up my own post, but I must apologise to the bride & groom for suggesting that they may be having a "weeding" instead of a wedding. Although if they were they'd be welcome to have it in my garden; it really needs it. Why do weeds thrive so much better than plants you want to grow in dry conditions? Or at least at my house? No problem....I could use them at my house for some weeding...maybe after the wedding! ;-)

I'll email you privately about the happy couple and our trip to Jolly ol' England.

Thanks for your help, Jenn

I HAVE to jump in here and tell you about our friends back in Wisconsin, USA, Steve and Kathy, who are VERY born-again Christians.... They have a terrace garden with a sign in it that states:

The Garden of Weeden. (versus the Garden of Eden!)

Slinking out.... Noreen ;)

For short trips, sometimes those air-fare +hotel deals are the best deals going. Areas of the city that are convenient for sightseeing are Westminster, Bloomsbury, maybe Kensington, especially the eastern part. Be careful using sites like Expedia. Often a hotel will claim its in a certain area, but when you look on a map, it is in a less favorable area. For instance, they might say they're in Westminster when they're really south of the Thames. (Maybe it's a nice area, but it's not very convenient for sightseeing.)

Whatever you do, look the hotel up on tripadvisor:

There are some really dreadful hotels in London, and you can't tell from the web sites just how dreadful they are.

There's a small bed & breakfast hotel in London that I like. It's in Bloomsbury, close to the British Museum and not far from all the other sights. It's called St. Margaret's Hotel. Hotels in London tend to be very expensive, but this one is good value for the money. A very nice and abundant English breakfast is served. One thing I have to warn you about is that many of the rooms in this hotel do not have private baths; however, they have very clean and spacious shared baths close to each room. (The rooms are around the perimeter of each floor and the baths are in the central part.) Here is their web site:

me warn you that the picture is taken from the back garden. Fromthe street, it is just one door in a row of very similar old houses.(I think the hotel occupies three adjacent buildings, though.)>
