Witch hat

Anna, I tried to look at it but again it looks like it is going to take a long time to down load, with my hook-up in the country, go slow, slow , slow.... but I am sure that it is a lovely sight

Anna Maria, one of the ladies in our Guild is from Germany and she will translate it for us. Most likely you will have done it by then, but two heads know more than one....LOL. When I read through the German text I do get a lot of it, but not all of it.

Hi Els!

I'm sorry that it takes so long time for you to download...

I'm not going to make the hat, since my knitting is very limited and never learnt to use DPNs. It's good that we got translators, isn't it?

Hugs,

Anna Maria / translator :-)

Michaela,

Thank you so much! I had just figured out the brim when I had a quilt shop hop to attend, so I couldn't get around to figuring the rest of it.

You're a peach, Michaela!

Yes it is. I looked at the pattern, there is not all that much writing to it, but there are a couple of technical expressions, I have problems with. My brother is a highschool teacher, but even he did not know some of these terms, he was going to look them up. My friend Gudrun is going to translate it so we all can knit one in our guild. The hat is a big smile I think, don't you

Hugs back

Okay, folks! I'm going to tame this beast yet!

I've found the first major problem in our most recent translation here:

that 74th round is a bit much for a decrease round. Going from 100 to 20 stitches in one round? Methinks that would lead to a beanie, not a cone. Also, only 86 rows would not equal a total length of 55 cm in the gauge given. I come up with around 154 rows in my calculations, and after turning the brim up, it should measure about that in the pattern below. I think I'll probably leave out rows 37-60 the next time I make it, though, just because it'd shorten it up a little more and end up closer to the length I like.

So, with that said, here's what I came up with. Attempt at your own risk, since I'm not done with mine yet (on row 74 as we speak, and I've sort of mashed the two translations together with this particular model). I apologize if they're too "longhand" for some folks; I need to see exact stitch counts when I work. I'll try to figure out how to post pictures somewhere when I finish, which will probably be in the next two days.

Witch Hat Pattern

Ammended instructions via Anastasia's trial-and-error method. Does not utilize Michaela's translation, so mix and match as you will.

Regia 8 yarn, 200g total (4 balls, 400 m c 440 yds). This is a worsted weight yarn, and I am using Plymouth's Suri Merino for my version, since it works up in the same gauge with a US7 needle. It may be a bit too floppy, though. We'll see.

Gauge: 20 st and 28 rows = 10cm x 10 cm with anywhere from a US6 to a US8 needle

Knit in the round, using stockinette stitch on circular needles. You will need to change to dpns at some point.

Hat is gauged for a 58 cm head circumference (just a bit less than 23 inches)

Finished length is 55 cm, according to pattern (about 21 ¾ inches)

Cast on 240 st, close

Knit one "foundation" row to begin (allows the decrease rows in the garter stitch to be knit rows)

Rows 1-5, alternate knitting one row and purling the next, creating garter stitch fabric.

Row 6: decrease 20 st evenly across row using k2tog

Repeat these six rows six times (120 stitches on needles)

Rows 37 - 60 - knit

Row 61: decrease 10 st evenly across row (110 st)

Row 62 - 75: knit

Row 76: decrease 10 st evenly across row (100 st)

Rows 77-88: knit

Row 89: decrease 10 st evenly across row (90 st)

Rows 90-101: knit

Row 102: decrease 10 st evenly across row (80 st)

Row 103-114: knit

Row 115: decrease 10 st evenly across row (70 st)

Row 116-127: knit

Row 128: decrease 10 st evenly across row (60 st)

Row 129-140: knit

Row 141: decrease 10 st evenly across row (50 st)

Row 142-153: knit

Row 154: decrease 10 st evenly across row (40 st)

Row 155-166: knit

Row 167: decrease 10 st evenly across row (30 st)

Row 168-179: knit

Row 180: decrease 10 st evenly across row (20 st)

Row 181-186: knit

Row 187: k2tog to end of row (10 st)

Row 188-193: knit

Double thread and pull through last ten stitches, drawing stitches tightly closed.

Turn front brim up and set button to secure.
