Thank you all for your wonderful birthday wishes. I really needed them yesterday. My day was filled with mixed blessings this year. The sad news is my old dog took a turn for the worst last Monday. I'd been nursing her all week trying to get her to feel better as I didn't want to think it the end. Finally Sunday I came to terms with it might be her time to go. Yesterday she seemed to be really suffering and not comfortable at any time. That it might be time to put her down. I did think "Not on my birthday!" I also thought I needed to wait until everyone in the family came home from school and work, so they could say a proper good-bye.

I came home from my daughter's football practice to find a wonderful dinner prepared by my husband. All my favorites... BBQed steak, baked potato with home cooked bacon bits and chopped chives, steamed asparagus and a Caesar salad. That's what I asked for my birthday was a home cooked meal. He did an excellent job. Table decorated with flowers and he bought me a case of my favorite soda Caffeine Free Diet Coke. He also bought me my new favorite movie on DVD... "Transformers." Very good movie BTW. My son made me a chain maile bracelet and matching earrings. I'll have to take a picture. They are just beautiful!

Then I broached the subject of my poor Miss Marie. My husband said, "Let's not discuss this on your birthday." I waited a few minutes and then gently told him I was alright sharing my day with my beloved loyal companion. That her comfort meant more to me than being selfish about my birthday. I just didn't want her to suffer anymore. Her comfort meant more to me than my feelings. He said he'd make the call and take her in. Said he'd like me to stay home with the kids. We all said a good-bye to Miss Wee Wee, a nickname she received in her old age, because she was so small and needed help getting around sometimes and for her occasional accidents on the carpet due to her old age.

When my husband returned we all had a group hug and cried. And laughed while apologizing to each other for getting tears and snot on each other's shoulders. We can be strange sometimes. Then my husband presented me with a dog angel pin the Vet office had given him attached to a very touching note saying they were sorry for our loss. It was very nice. I wanted my husband to keep it, because he took Marie in. He wanted me to keep it, because she was my dog. Handing it to me he said, "Happy Birthday" through his tears. Again we chuckle at the ironicness of the situation it being the perfect gift, yet a sad gift. My daughter started getting a little upset at the levity. I told her it was OK to have humor in great sadness as long as you're respectful. It helps with the grieving. With that said my husband said, "Can I have something else for my birthday?" We chuckled again, because his birthday is in a month.

Fare thee well my dear friend you'll always be in our memories.

Lynne...I am sorry you had to say goodbye to your furbaby on your = birthday...although I can sympathise with your loss! I also had to say = farewell to my beloved 10 year old shih tzu Cara Mia two weeks = ago.....after a short week of illness.
