Re: POLL: Favorite baking gadget

I just love those little mini cookie/ice cream scoops. they make making cookies so much faster and more uniform. I always seem to get more cookies. if i want to make giant cookies, i use the regular size ice cream scoops. they are also great for scooping muffin mixtures when making muffins.

Number one is my little timer that i can take with me when i leave the room during cooking.

Number two, regarding baking, my set of icing bags, and tips. They can be used to make anything more eye appealing.

One of my favorite tools is a large spiral mixing tool (I don't know what else to call it) for making bread. It's shaped like a wooden spoon handle on one end and has a cicular metal device on the other. It's wonderful for mixing together bread dough before it gets to the kneading stage. I saw Father Dominique use it on his show and now I don't make bread without it.

That could be what's it called. I don't use a Kichenaide for my bread, I make everything by hand, but that could be what's it's called. It's been a while since his show was on.

King Arthur Flour calls it a dough whisk. Here's a picture.

I also love my scoop, but I have a hard time releasing the dough sometimes. Tricks to resolve that problem, anyone??

Yes, dip the scoop in water, every 4-5 scoopings or so

I really liked his show, too. If you can't find that tool anywhere, you can ask on his site

. The site, incidentally, has all the recipes from his shows, as well as books and videos.

Hmmm. That doesn't work for me -- it defaults to their home page. Their search engine doesn't find anything under "dough whisk".

If you look under their catalogue click on bread baking, then tools, then look for dough whisk. The link does work if you cut and paste the entire link--with my newsreader the 8 at the end gets cut off.

My vote is for my precision mini sifter. Great for lightly flouring surfaces.

Let me guess Alan, your graduating subject was not communication.;-)

The catalogue search engine will find it under subject: tools&kitchenware= and input: dough whisk.

Alan:

It's King Arthur item number 5568

Dough Whisk (5568)

Experienced bread bakers rely on this sturdy, 15-inch, wood-handled brodpisker, or Dough Whisk, for everything from the stiffest bread dough to the most delicate pancake or muffin batter. We've sold thousands of these whisks over the years; we use them at our national bread-baking classes, and once folks see how they work, they just have to have one! We now offer this whisk with our centuries old King Arthur logo.

$9.95 US + s/h

You should be able to find it by item number or by searching for "whisk" under "bread baking" using the web site catalog word search feature.

Truly a fine classic baker's tool.
