Are you fricking kidding me?! I was almost crucified on LampworkEtc. for admitting that I copied someone else's *technique* just to try to figure out how they made the glass do a certain thing. It was borosilicate glass and I hadn't ever seen glass do a particular thing so I wanted to try the
*technique* as best as I guessed how it might work. I even credited the original artist for inspiring me with the *technique* which I have since learned was certainly no original idea by her but something pretty standard and oft used by other glass artists.I am making a big deal by stating it was a *technique* rather than an actual design although I have to admit I have been inspired to try certain things after seeing they are possible. For example, I had never thought to try to sculpt with glass until I saw Wendy Tobler's dogs. I made my sister a Yorkshire Terrier head for X-mas one year but I never even took a photo because I was afraid of what other glass artists would do to me if they saw me making a glass dog head. I am even scared to admit that I did a glass lampwork dog!
Interestingly, the artist whose *technique* I tried to recreate teaches lampwork. I wonder what she teaches if she freaks out so badly when someone actually attempts to learn something from her?
Okay, so I sound bitter but this is a very upsetting thing for me. I have rarely had hate spewed at me like that and I thought it was pretty undeserved.
