OT- Laptops

OK all you computer savvy people, I am finally going to get a laptop so that we can stay in touch on the road. I would appreciate any recommendations. Please remember that while I can use one, I am not a geek and just understand the basics of computerese. For example, I frequently forget the the simplest cure for many problems is to reboot and only get there with prompting after asking for help from a variety of sources. I do use Firefox, but I am still using outlook express for email. I do have several spyware, adware, virus scans that I use regularly. I know I need WIFI in the latest version available. Has anyone tried Verizon's service for wireless internet? I do not need fancy graphics or music functions. I would like as large a screen as possible. I am leaning towards Toshiba per Consumer's Report, but I want some other input. Thank you, Armand

Apple iBook. Easy to use, very stable OS. Apple mail and Safari are great, but you can install Firefox and thunderbird and import your mail settings from Outlook quite easily. Built-in wireless network capabilities.

Best deal - go through the Apple Certified Refurbished program. Lots of machine for less money.

don't know whether you're a Mac person or a PC person, I'm happy with my HP (now Compaq, my husband's got one of those, and after the dead-out-of-the-box one that OfficeMax replaced without asking, hes happy too). For all I know the people at work who got theirs from work are happy with their Dell's. Mine was mostly for being able to check email and stuff when not at work, and it's the only PC I (personally) use (and have, for that matter - I work with computers and I try to stay away from them when I'm not working).

You can get cards for just about anything, including Wi-Fi (or even SCSI, as my husband has for his telescope), just make sure that you have the processor speed, memory and disk space you need ...

I've been using a Dell Inspiron for a couple of years, no problems. I got it through Dell's refurbish program and saved a bundle.

Make sure you get at least 500 MB of RAM; with anything less, you'll have performance problems with today's hyoooge programs. 1G is better.

Whatever you take, do NOT buy a laptop from the company GERICOM .... the device is not bad, but the customer service is useless. Which means, if anything happens, you ll be without laptop and help.

Take care

I had an Ispiron for ages and loved it especially the swappable bays. Sadly it died a death and has long been replaced by another laptop and then a desktop but I still have it tucked away somewhere waiting for a new motherboard. Why? Dunno but I hate throwing out an old computer.

Su, your post elicited a knowing "why, indeed" from me when I read it. Why? Because even though I am typing this on my Sony Vaio, there is a Toshiba Satellite in the other room with a semi-dead had drive that I cannot bear to part with! LOL!
