memory cards

Thanks for the opportunity to "mine your wisdom." My wife and I just bought a used New Home MC 8000 machine. It is awesome! For people who've never had anything better than zigzag and straight stitch, it's scary-kewel.

Cutting to the chase: Our machine has no memory cards for the embroidery function. We've been looking for the cards and find many on eBay, etc.

There are also many references to blank memory cards. We have been able to discern that our 8000 uses a PCMCIA-type card which is a very common device in the portable computer world. There are LOTS of blank cards available at very low prices, as well as adapters for using Compact Flash, Memory Stick and SD memory cards in the PCMCIA slot. (We even have one of them.) Does anyone know what has to be done to properly format blank memory for use on the 8000? Paterns must be in .sew format, but we're wondering about formating the memory on the card prior to saving a design. Is there a special format the 8000 requires or do we just "format" the pc card like we would to use in on a computer or digital camera?

TIA David & Sucile

Just try formatting the card on your computer and write a files to it with the correct suffix. Plaxe in the machine a see if you can read it. If not try another format style. Stick with the old DOS formats FAT and 512 bytes per sector etc..

I use an "Amazing Design" box for my machine and read on the top of it that it is compatible with the "New Home (SEW)" format in its slot #3.

I use the box for a Babylock and it came with the proper card and it -can not- use any other type of card (although it looks like a PC card). The box does all the necessary formatting / erasing and writing from the PC to the card.

*You might consider one of these boxes used as they do come up on eBay quite frequently.
