Sweatshirt hole fix?

Hi,

My s-i-l gave me a sweatshirt jacket for her granddaughter that has a small hole/tear in it. Do you all think if I put stabilizer behind it and solvy on top and embroidered a design over it that it would work to cover the hole/tear?

Thanks!

Hi Paula, Just make sure the design is bigger than the edges of the tear. I would use a fusible poly mesh instead of solvy. Solvy will melt in water and may cause a problem later. Fuse some to each side and stabilze with cut-away. HTH, Nana

Sure would!! I would make that stabilizer a heavy weight cut-away, and leave a nice margin on it as it will be the only thing supporting the stitching across the hole. If you put a piece of iron on that holds the edges firmly together, then the cut-away under that, it should do fine, I think.

I agree. I was camping with some girlfriends (an all girl campout) and my polar fleece sweatshirt I made got a hole when a fire spark landed on me. I managed to get it off before it did too much damage. I appliqued a butterfly right over the hole and everyone thinks I did it with the design in mind--Not! It looks much better than it did originally. Embellishment can sometimes be better than plain!

Liz, I thought of that, but I decided to use a bit of iron-on fusible on the back of the hole, Cut A Way Plus on the bottom and Super Solvy on the top. Turned out real nice. We'll see what happens with washings!

I did have a small glitch with the Isafil thread I was using. Somewhere in the middle of the design (not where the hole was) the thread starting "rolling" off the spool (spool is a thin cardboard tube) and caused a thread break which made a little "bunchy spot" on the design. Don't know why this thread does this.....just starts falling off the spool. I should not have walked away while it was sewing.

Anyway, I downloaded a design from embroidery.com with a swimmer and dolphin. My grandniece (7) had just come back from a cruise where she swam with the dolphins, and she loved the design!

Thanks to the others who made suggestions too!

My husband got a tear in the seat of his jeans. I put a gone fishing sign on them. When the jeans wore out, I cut out the design and can sew it on something else.
