Where are you, Jack? I'm in central Idaho and am ashamed to have not yet hit the Canyonlands. Awesome country. Lots of folks here swing down that way in the Spring. The landscapes and secret spots are mind boggling indeed. Lot of fusing inspiration too I bet.

Central Idaho? Stanley?
Not quite that remote. Blaine County, Ketchum area .... once a great place, now sinking into the terminal mire of development and 'progress'. Actually this place was remote and slow paced once upon a time... but nobody much remembers those days, beyond a few of my cohorts. When I finally move away I will miss Baldy.... but the rest of the area is no longer unique nor charming, except to realtors....;-) Fortunately, the Idaho backcountry is still pretty wild and that's always been my muse....Sawtooths, Pioneers, Boulder-White Clouds, etc....and the great rivers too, of course, especially the Salmon

That type of area is sometimes referred to as a "yuppie urban ghetto". Teluride, Moab, the list goes on. Nice places, but somewhat disheartening if you watched the changes happen. The last time I saw my father alive I advised him to go a bit out of the way and see the headwaters of the Salmon on his way back to Michigan. He died a few months after that but at least he got to see one of the Crown Jewels of the west.
I discovered Stanley Lake in 1978. Beautiful area. Also remember a place called 4th of July Creek. Done a good bit of mushroom hunting in the area. Traveled up to Sun Valley a few times for my son's hockey tournaments. Fun town.
