With all the unpleasant things we hear about so many celebrities these days - how refreshing to hear something really lovely about at least one of them.I don`t know how many in America know of the immense generosity and kindness shown to our Great Ormond Street Hospital in London by Johnny Depp some time ago? He not only gave them a phenomenal amount of money in gratitude for their treatment of his daughter, but sent over to America for his "Captain Jack" costume to be flown over and visited the hospital to see the kids and sat down and read to them. I`m sure they`ll never forget it - and I bet the nurses were just as thrilled!If anyone has anything bad to say about Johnny Depp , I for one, don`1t want to hear it!Pat"Be who you are and say what you feel....Because those that matter....don't mind....And those that mind....don't matter."

She was the first time I came up against what happens when you intend to die at home. We have pretty good service but the nurse who came in was not allowed to administer meds, it had to be us. Done to protect the nurse and we could understand that. Those of us closely involved were given a lesson in putting whatever drugs into the portocath and taught how to measure accurately etc.

It sounds terrible but was actually a pretty good system, at least it is in place so one can die at home if at all possible. Another good friend died a year ago March at home and her three daughters were wonderful to her, she had been scared that she might die in pain from the cancer as she had seen her uncle die years ago, but it was nothing like that. Back then, if you didn't go to hospital you suffered. Personally I can't see leaving home to go and die in a hospital, I intend to die right here lol YMMV

I intend to do the same Sheena. My sister and her husband both made the agreement that one would take care of the other in case of terminal illness. Well, my sister fought a battle with breast cancer for many years - it finally spread to her liver and there was no hope then (in her case). I think it was around April that they told her there was nothing else they could do for her. Her husband took such good care of her, he was taught how to administer morphine into the portocath. It seems to me that they said they both had to sign lots of papers in order for her to die at home. She died August 6, 2006. Such a shame - she and her husband had plans to travel the world - he was only retired a year before she died so they didn't get very far. However, his being a captain with an airline, he'd taken her many places during their lifetime together, so we're all thankful for that.

My most recent experience with my Mother - she was sent home from the hospital when we all knew she had pneumonia - she died one week later (March 26, 2008). They shuffle people in and out of hospitals like animals these days, it seems .... so that is certainly not a place where I want to die.
