It is commendable that the maker addressed the need for a unique and personal gift by producing a complete set of ceramic ramen bowls for a friend. This project demonstrates a high level of dedication, as The Clay Collective created four finished bowls from the initial stages of creation. The resulting pieces feature dark black exteriors contrasted with glossy, marbled interiors in various blue, turquoise, and green hues. The bowls were originally formed using reddish-brown clay on a motorized pottery wheel. After the initial shaping, the maker carefully trimmed the base by securing the piece upside down in a Giffin Grip clamp system. The maker applied a grey glaze to the entire exterior surface up to the bottom rim. Inside each bowl, three separate liquid glazes were poured and then swirled together by tilting the piece in circular movements. The final set was successfully fired after the glazing process. One minor detail is that one of the bowls received a distinct foot, which was a necessary adjustment because the bowl used for the trimming clip proved too thin at the bottom. The maker is still working to confirm whether the final interior glaze utilized blue rutile or blue midnight.

Could you provide more detail regarding the trimming process used to create the recessed foot ring? Specifically, does the maker use a specific type of metal loop trimming tool, or was the shaping done using other implements while the ceramic piece was secured in the clamp system?

The maker stated that metal loop trimming tools were used to carve out a recessed foot ring on the trimmed base. This was done after the leather-hard bowl was flipped over. It was noted that a maker's mark stamp was subsequently pressed into the trimmed base of the ceramic piece. The maker has not specified whether other tools were used during the initial carving of that recessed foot.
