Beginners help

Where can a newbie go for "Dummies" type help with this hobby ? I do not even know the meaning of Raku, bisque and etc.

I own a nice digital Paragon kiln that is used for a hobby other than firing ceramics. I am a flint knapper that uses my kiln to "cook" rock for knapping. I would like to play around with the ceramics thing to see if I am interested. First I would like to learn the meanings of the words associated with the ceramic hobby.

Thanks in advance, Tampa Bob who actually lives a good bit further South at this time.

That was not only helpful, it was just what I had been looking for. I wonder why I could not find such a page in my Google searches.

Now that I have a basic understand of the lingo, I can now start reading the "how to" type articles.

Thanks, Tampa Bob

Hi Wayne, I am not quite Key West South in South Florida. :) Arcadia though. I have not been down to Key West in at least ten years. How is it down there these days ?

I know so little at this point that I do not know enough to be able to ask any specific questions. The glossary that Steve pointed me to was what I needed to get a basic start.

I would find an article or web page, start reading and come across a bunch of terms like slip, bisque and etc that I did not have a clue what they meant. Made reading the article very difficult, as I could not comprehend what the author was conveying.

As I obtain some basic knowledge I am certain I will want specific questions asked and I will keep your offer in mind. Thanks.

The digitalfire site Steve posted is one of the best out there.

and use 'newbie' in the seach 'title and body' you will come up with questions others new to the trade have asked.http://lindaarbuckle.com/arbuckle_handouts.html might be one you like. Lots out there. Hope you're staying dry. We just got hit up here in NY and the winds were impressive (have been working on battery until just a moment ago as it took out the electric).

Hi Bob :-)

You can also go to

- there is a group called Ceramics which you can join. Whenever a video about ceramics is posted to that group, you will see it in your subscriptions (you have to have a _free_ member account to subscribe to groups and users).

I might be beating my own drum here, but I have put out quite a few videos now showing different things about my ceramics and trying to explain how and why I do things. I am hoping to make some videos for total newbies who don't have a lot of equipment as well. I want to show people how fun clay can be! Also my "minor frustrations" video has a bit about how fragile dry clay can be - push pause, watch the beginning - (the middle if you feel like it) - and the ending, which is a slow-motion of the beginning and I find it kinda cool.

You will find my videos at

do subscribe! You as a "newbie" are exactly the audience I am wanting to reach! As ANYTHING you want in the comments to the videos and I will reply as well as I can! Have fun! That's what its all about :-)

Normally they will do just fne. I guess a lot matters on how long they have been "out" in as much as how much dust thet have collected. A gentle blast oair to remover the dust and continue as normal. Out where I live, there are a lot of range stock and horses. A big problem with keeping these clean and tiddy. The horses have left next door as well as their owner and things seem to hve imporved and a lot better now.
