glaze peeling off

Hello Everyone, I wipe my bisqued pots with a wet sponge before I glaze to rid them of dust. I had one bowl that as the glaze was drying, the glaze started peeling off in big chunks. I had to wash it all off and start over. I was wondering what might have made this happen. Maybe the bowl was too damp for the glaze to adhere to it? Thank you for any input, Sandi

I've seen glazes crack and fall off when they were put on way too thick. Certain glazes are more prone to this problem than others as well. If the pot were too wet, it would be not taking on as much glaze (it would absorb less) and I have never seen it be a problem in that direction (the problem would be too thin an application of glaze....).

Was there any evidence of dust on the pot side surface of the peeled off chunks? Glaze doesn't easily come off a surface that is too wet; it just takes a long time drying.

Rather than wiping your pots, put them into a container with a large lid if there is going to be a time interval between bisque firing and glazing so that they don't gather dust. That or glaze them straight out of the bisque kiln.

I feel that wiping doesn't remove accumulated dust, it just re- distributes it and makes it into a separate layer. If you have to clean them do it under running water and them dry them on top of the oven or similar.

I have had that happen when the glaze is applied too thickly.
